Accommodation Details
Capel Ogwen lies on an unspoilt, sparsely populated stretch of coastline and is approached through a vast lodged gateway and down a mile of private drive. A former head gamekeeper's home, it is a house of space and character, extended so that large groups can enjoy themselves together or be solitary as they wish. Ideal for house parties and family reunions, it is available for short breaks and long weekends out of high season. Excellent Sea Trout and Salmon fishing on the River Ogwen can be arranged with the Penrhyn Estate Office.
A door in the garden wall opens on to the fabulous Ogwen Estuary,
where the tide comes gently in to the ribbon of shingle and grass. The
Traeth Lavan Nature Reserve covers approximately 6,000 acres of sands
and mudflats. This is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and in
midwinter the sands attract masses of waders and wildfowl.
The
house is sheltered on the coastal side by a ten-foot wall; southwards
there are stunning views across the fields to the Carneddau mountains,
whilst to the north is the panorama of the Lavan Sands and Anglesey.
The garden, with lawns and shrubs, is ideal for games, with a paved
terrace for barbecue, outdoor meals or just lying in the sun.
The
spacious sitting room has an open fire and French doors to the garden
and terrace. The dining room has a serving hatch through to the
newly-refurbished kitchen and breakfast area. The kitchen is
well-equipped with a electric cooker, microwave and dishwasher,
fridge/freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer. A door leads into the
double garage, where a table tennis table and darts board provide
entertainment for rainy days or a chance to arrange evening
tournaments.
Upstairs are five bedrooms, all but one looking
over the wall to the sea and Anglesey beyond. There are two large
double bedrooms, and three twin rooms. The beds have duvets. There is a
bathroom with basin and WC, and a separate shower room with basin and
WC. One twin-bedded room on the ground floor has a WC and washbasin in
a cloakroom on the same level, and with ramps for access to the garden,
grab rails and adequate space for turning, the house has been inspected
and passed as suitable for wheelchair users.

Hello Menai Holidays staff,
Last weekend my husband and I held our Silver Wedding Celebration at Capel Ogwen and what a wonderful weekend we had! Together with our friends we were a party of ten. The house was beautifully clean and a welcome tea tray was waiting for us after our journeys. The days were sunny and there was plenty of hot water and a huge log fire in the evening. The pinnacle of the event was a Celebration Dinner on the Saturday night and we had Cottage Suppers to do the catering.
Barbara Lewis ( chef) produced an exquisite meal. We liaised beforehand about menus and although I hadn't used her before I felt she was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about food - and I was right. She cooked everything in Capel Ogwen's big kitchen and when we all returned from a trip to Plas Newydd, she met us with a cup of tea and Bara Brith.
The meal itself helped make the celebration go like a dream. The canapes were delicious and novel, the starter and main meal full of variety and the deserts a delight.
We decided on a black- tie event with champagne, of course, and Barbara's food suited the occasion perfectly. She set the table, served the coffee and cheese board and completely cleared up afterwards. She and her staff were friendly, well turned out and served us efficiently and unobtrusively and I can't recommend her highly enough for an event like this.
We hope to return to Capel Ogwen for our 30th Wedding Anniversary ( Pearl ) and look forward to arranging this with your helpful office staff.
With thanks Frank and Rhona Whiteford.
