In the heart of Snowdonia, Llanberis is a magnet for walkers and climbers.  The town was originally built to house workers in the Dinorwig slate quarry, which finally closed in 1969.  The town is now home to Electric Mountain, a pumped-storage power station located deep inside Elidir mountain which offers a fascinating guided tour, and the Welsh Slate Museum, inside the Victorian workshops beside Llyn Padarn which brings the local slate industry to life.  Llanberis is also the starting point for the Snowdon Mountain Railway as well as the Llanberis Lake Railway.
