Family Attractions on Anglesey
Anglesey Sea Zoo, Brynsiencyn - Wales' largest marine aquarium, sited right on the shore of the Menai Strait is a great weather-proof day out. The habitats of over 150 species found around Anglesey and the North Wales coastline have been carefully recreated. From the complexity of the inverebrates in the Bone Free Zone, your visit will take you through a Shipwreck, then onto a walk over the Shark Pool and finally onto the Big Fish Forest displaying the marine life of the open ocean. Great for helping adventurous little minds learn about what they find in rockpools! There is also a café and a number of outdoor facilities including crazy golf, adventure playground, and bouncy castle.Foel Farm, Brynsiencyn - A great way for children to experience a working farm. Everyone is invited to meet, touch and feed the animals! There are also tractor & trailer and quad bike and mini-trailer rides, and pony rides. There is also a café, gift shop and a chocolate workshop where you can see chocolate being made.
Holyhead Mountain & South Stack Lighthouse - The mountain is the highest point on Anglesey. At its summit are a prehistoric hill-fort and the remains of a 19th Century semaphore station, and on a clear day you can see Ireland and the Isle of Man. To one side of the Mountain, reached via Holyhead, is the Breakwater Country Park - an ideal picnic spot and vantage point for wildlife spotters. To the west, the cliffs overlook South Stack Lighthouse, reached via 400 steep steps and across a narrow bridge over a deep-water channel. Tours of the lighthouse are available from April to September. Overlooking the lighthouse is Ellin's Tower - a seabird centre managed by the RSPB. It is an ideal place from which to watch a variety of birds, including Puffins in season.
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch - The site of Anglesey's first train station, known locally as Llanfair PG. The full name means "St Mary's Church in the hollow of the White Hazel near a Rapid Whirlpool and the Church of St Tysilio near the Red Cave". The name was given to the village in the 19th Century to attract tourists. The first ever Women's Institute in the whole of the UK and Channel Islands opened here in 1915.
Menai Bridge Farmers' Market - Held on the third Saturday of each month, the market is a great way of enjoying the fruits of this fertile island. From award-winning Gorau Glas cheese and locally produced Welsh Black beef to mussels and oysters fresh from the Menai Strait. Elsewhere on the island, Hooton's pick-your-own and farm shop, Valley Butchers and Sarah's Delicatessan in Beaumaris are well worth a visit.
Pili Palas, Menai Bridge - Pili Palas has a walk-through butterfly house, and a variety of snakes, lizards and other less exotic animals in pets corner - perfect for younger visitors. There is also an adventure playground, bouncy castle, and indoor soft-play area.
Ucheldre Centre, Holyhead - An arts centre located in what was the chapel building for an order of nuns. Saved by local residents, the building is now an arts centre - with a programme of regular events such as film showings, theatre and music performances as well as exhibitions and childrens' art clubs. It also has a small gift shop and café.
