Discover yourself

There are so many things to do in North Wales which is why Visit Wales have named 2019 the Year of Discovery.

I feel this is apt given that I’ve lived in North Wales for a decade now and still not experienced all that this incredible part of the UK has to offer! Gone are the days where I’m drawn to exotic climes to get my fix of something new. I can holiday at home here in North Wales and get that all-important feel-good factor. Read on for my top five things I personally recommend you should discover in North Wales.

1. Discover…yourself

Discover yourself

We spend so much time rushing to and fro, scrolling the social feeds of others, being a good son, daughter, friend or colleague that it is so easy to lose touch with ourselves. North Wales is a fantastic place if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle and return to simpler times.

We have quiet beaches to explore, wonderful walks and plenty of places where you can connect with nature and hear nothing but birdsong. We have holiday cottages with lovely reading nooks where you could lose yourself in that book you’ve been meaning to read for a while. Or why not simply switch off your phone, run a bath and do nothing more than ‘be’ for a while?

Whatever your idea of ‘me time’ is, you can find it here in North Wales. We have more intimate holiday cottages for the solo travellers out there, as well as plenty of family-friendly holiday cottages across North Wales, too.

2. Discover…your adventurous side

Adventurous side

Whether you’re a self-confessed adrenaline-junkie or someone who only likes to flirt with danger, North Wales has an abundance of activities on offer. Paddleboarding is fantastic for those wanting something a little more sedate and is a great way to explore our many lakes and the seas surrounding North Wales.

You could, of course, hurtle down a zip wire, skim over the Menai Strait on a rib ride, or even do some white water rafting. There are so many adventurous things to do in North Wales for people of all ages. Check out some of our top family-friendly activities to do here.

3. Discover…culture

Harlech Castle.

If like me, you enjoy a culture fix whilst you’re on holiday in a new place, the good news is North Wales has a lot to offer! From art galleries to castles, glorious gardens to heritage railways, there really is something to suit you.

My personal recommendation for heritage lovers would be a visit to the stupendous Cadw owned Conwy Castle – the views from the parapets are simply breathtaking.

For fellow National Trust members, we have some absolute gems here in North Wales. Plas Newydd overlooks the Menai Strait and has a stunning garden surrounding it – that’s certainly one of my favourites.

We also have some brilliant museums that pack an educational punch! Whatever your cultural kick, you will be spoilt for choice!

4. Discover…your tastebuds

Discover your tastebuds

Whilst North Wales might not be renowned nationwide for its culinary delights, it definitely has an up-and-coming scene that’s worth taking notice of. We have places like The Marram Grass whose head chef has competed twice on BBC Two’s The Great British Menu.

If you’d prefer something a little more relaxed, we also have incredible cafês, pubs with real fires for the winter or amazing beer gardens during the summer. Not to mention the restaurants with great vegan options, the independent delicatessens or the fab takeaways you could take back and enjoy in the comfort of your holiday cottage.

For those who love a tipple, we also have sensational spirit producers like North Star Distillery who produce magical small-batch gin or Aber Falls who’s whiskey you’ll see on offer throughout North Wales. We have the delectable delights of local craft brewers Wild Horse who’s experimental brews are not to be missed. North Wales can offer so much to tickle your tastebuds – I promise!

5. Discover…true comfort
