Croeso y Cymru – Welcome to Wales this February half-term

It’s not just a cliché. When you book a holiday cottage in North Wales – from the top left-hand corner of the bewitching Llŷn Peninsula, through the breath-taking majesty of Snowdonia, and around the picture-perfect beauty of Ynys Mon (that’s Anglesey to you and me) – there really is something for everyone. Even the most demanding of your little people will find heaps to do throughout February half term in North Wales. Croeso y Cymru. Welcome to the heart of real, Welsh Wales.

Braving the Beach

Perhaps the most inviting aspect of North Wales, aside from the abundance of outstanding natural beauty and all those cosy, log-fired stone farmhouses, of course, is the vast array of incredible beaches. You’re spoilt for choice on the Llŷn Peninsula. Unspoilt rocky coves for adventurers, bustling Abersoch, pretty Aberdaron (pictured below), rugged Nefyn and Porth Dinllaen (complete with a pub on the beach). Anglesey also has plenty – from the vast sandy expanse of Newborough to picturesque Beaumaris.

Beaches? In February half term? Yes indeed – get those waterproofs and wellies on for fabulous bracing walks, wild and windy beach football games and even find sheltered spots for crab fishing. You can always plan which you intend to lie on – or swim, sail and surf at – come the summer.

Getting out and about no matter what the weather

Whilst climbing and walking around Snowdon is perhaps best left for spring and summer, the area is still full of unmatched attractions:

  • Explore the area’s history and heritage at the slate mines at Llechwedd. You could even try traditional slate splitting.
  • Fly over a quarry at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour (with other activities suitable for the tinies) at Zip World.
  • Ride a narrow-gauge steam railway. From Porthmadog, take the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway. In Llanberis there is the Llanberis Lake Railway and the Talyllyn Railway passes the beautiful Dolgoch Falls (which are even more impressive in the rain).
  • Take the children on an adventure through Greenwood Forest Park. With a roller-coaster, live entertainment and crafts, there is something for the whole family to enjoy.
  • Caernarfon castle has a presence straight out of fairy-tales, and is sure to impress everyone. Make time for a little shopping and eating within the town’s walls, too. Then discover more of the area’s castles and historic houses.

As well as the stunning beaches and towns, Anglesey has some superb attractions, pubs, cafes and restaurants, as well as lots to do if the weather’s not on your side.

  • Anglesey Sea Zoo.
  • Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch Station. No visit to Anglesey is complete without a photo opportunity and several attempts at pronunciation.
  • Pili Palas Nature World is home to a jungle of amazing butterflies and exotic animals – even meerkats.
  • Many galleries, such as Oriel Mon and craft centres will offer activities for children.

The Llŷn Peninsula is a haven for relaxation and tranquillity – the ultimate getting-away-from-it-all destination. Within easy reach of everything Snowdonia has to offer, it’s also home to some of the most beautiful countryside and beaches imaginable. Get back to nature on the beaches, or with woodland walks and gentle climbs (refer again to ‘waterproofs’ if necessary), or perhaps have a go at pony trekking as there are no pesky flies at this time of year. Again, there are a plethora of good eateries, most serving home-cooked local produce. You can have a lovely day out at Plas Glyn y Weddw house and gallery in Llanbedrog, equidistant between Pwllheli and Abersoch. Afterwards, take a scenic drive around the coast to Plas yn Rhiw then perhaps continue up to Aberdaron.

No time to fit it all in? There’s always the next holiday. And the next…
