Internationally recognised, the Blue Flag award is widely considered to be a gold standard for beaches and is much sought after. It’s such wonderful news to see that out of 44 beaches in Wales to be awarded, 18 of these are in North Wales.

2019 Blue Flag Awards
Abersoch Beach
Some of the criteria for a beach to be awarded Blue Flag recognition include:
- Environmental education information – activities must be offered and promoted, map of the beach indicating different facilities must be displayed
- Water quality – must comply with water quality sampling and no industrial waste-water or sewage should affect the beach area
- Environmental management – beach and beach facilities must be clean, no unauthorised camping or dumping of waste on the beach and coral reefs in the vicinity much be monitored
- Safety and services – first aid equipment and supply of drinking water must be available, emergency plans to cope with pollution and if appropriate, an adequate number of lifeguards/lifesaving equipment on the beach

On the island of Anglesey, Benllech, Church Bay (Porth Swtan), Llanddwyn, Llanddona, Trearddur Bay and Porth Dafarch beaches have all made the grade. RibRide has also been awarded the Blue Flag for Sustainable Boat Tour Operator.

Barmouth (Abermaw), Abersoch, Criccieth Traeth y Promenade, Dinas Dinlle, Morfa Bychan and Pwllheli are championing the beautiful Snowdonia and Llŷn coast.
