“For a peaceful relaxing stay with friends this is the perfect house.”

The house does need some attention but it's so friendly and welcoming you can easily overlook its flaws. We love Capel Ogwen, its location and views.

The property

Sitting on an unspoilt and sparsely populated stretch of coastline near Bangor on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park, Capel Ogwen is approached through a vast lodged gateway and down a mile of private drive.

A former head gamekeeper's home, this is a holiday house of space and character, extended so that large groups can enjoy themselves together or be as independent as they wish. Capel Ogwen is sheltered on the coastal side by a ten-foot wall.

Southwards there are stunning views across the fields to the Carneddau mountains, whilst to the north is the panorama of the Lavan Sands and Anglesey. "With Menai Holiday Cottages since day one, Capel Ogwen is still loved by all that holiday here year after year." A door in the garden wall opens onto the fabulous Ogwen estuary, where the tide comes gently into the ribbon of shingle and grass.

The Traeth Lavan Nature Reserve covers approximately 6,000 acres of sands and mudflats; this is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and in midwinter, the sands attract masses of waders and wildfowl. Ideal for house parties and family reunions, Capel Ogwen is available for short breaks and long weekends out of high season.

About the location

Menai Bridge 2.5 miles; Beaumaris 7 miles; Caernarfon 10 miles; Llanberis 11 miles.

Bangor is a university town on the North Wales coast with a large range of shops, bars and restaurants. It is the main crossing point for the Isle of Anglesey with two road bridges across the Menai Strait. Across the water, the castle and pier at Beaumaris make a lovely day out, or you can catch a boat to enjoy a trip out to Puffin Island. The Anglesey Coastal Path takes in beautiful scenery, and the island is home to many fine beaches including Rhosneigr, Trearddur Bay and Red Wharf Bay. The NT mansion Plas Newydd is on the island, while on the mainland further NT properties can be found including Penrhyn Castle and Bodnant Gardens. The spectacular mountains and lakes of Snowdonia are just a short drive way, with plenty of castles, beaches and other attractions on offer in this wonderful region. Bangor and the Menai Straits really do offer the best of both worlds!

Note: Excellent sea trout and salmon fishing on the River Ogwen can be arranged with the Penrhyn Estate Office.
