“The property needs maintenance, there is mould/salt/damp on some walls especially in the twin bedroom which is very unpleasant to sleep next to.”

It's also visible in the bathroom and on the stairs. The chair in the lounge is very stained and the sofa is old and faded. The kitchen cupboards smell musty and there is not enough crockery, the kitchen pans are quite unpleasant. This is definitely not a luxury property. The track up to the property is full of holes and there should be a warning of this as most people wouldn't want to take their cars across it. Overall a disappointing stay and would not recommend it to anyone. The property ...

“Overall a great week at such an amazing property, with plenty to do in the area.”

We loved the tower it felt like such an adventure although the dog kept getting lost! The log burner in the living room is lovely although I found the sofa and chairs a bit old and tired. The bedrooms were very comfortable although I found the beds a bit squeaky. And if you do have limited mobility you will find the stairs very difficult they really are steep and narrow. I'm just over 6ft and I hit my head a couple of times. The big windows are single glazed and you get a lot of condensation; fan heaters are provided in each room in addition to the central heating. The bathroom is spacious with a lovely big bath, there is also a small shower on the ground floor which isn't shown in the property details although we didn't use it preferring the luxury of the bath. The kitchen was fine although we thought it needed more crockery. Only 4 dinner plates and 4 side plates meant that we had to run the dishwasher when it was only half full which is a bit wasteful. The other niggle was that we had been given a welcome cake and a bottle of milk to get started, but the milk only had 1 day left and was already a bit lumpy. The tower appears to have a full fire alarm system which is good to know, my only concern was that the door to the boiler room had been hooked open which would allow the staircase to fill with smoke if a fire were to start on the ground floor. So keep all the doors shut as the staircase is your fire exit! So just a couple of minor niggles. If you accept that this is an unusual old building and accept the idiosyncrasies you'll have a great week. Mind your head on the way down!

“A great stay.”

Totally unique experience. LOTR was our soundrack for the weekend. We kept the property style a suprise for the kids- they were ecstatic when we parked up outside as they spotted the tower as we drove up! Loved the quietness at night, could only hear the owls and sheep- was bliss! Beds were very comfortable too. Had a disney princess moment when several blue tits played on on the window ledge as I had a bubble bath. Amazing! I would recommend able bodied people only as the stairs can get quite tiring (wouldn't take toddlers as it would be stressful with the stairs) Our kids are 8 and 13. Don't forget your slippers as no carpets. Was lovely and warm in the rooms and the log burner in the top floor lounge was ace. For the price I would have liked more essentials like handsoap in the bathrooms, coffee and more glasses (only 1 wine glass). Great to have a clothes horse to dry clothes after rainy walks. Microwave and oven available. Yummy welsh cake and milk on arrival. The location has several supermarkets just 10 minutes away. We booked at Dylans restaurant too which is 15 minutes away on the coast. Would definitely recommend and have done so already!

“Another very comfortable, fun stay in the amazing Tower .”

Super comfortable beds , very warm and toastie in each room despite some fairly extreme weather while we were there . We feel much fitter for our experience as the steps to each level are a real fitness test , especially after being out walking all day . Also good for memory maintainance as you really don’t want to forget anything when you go up to the lounge !!! A great place , totally unique .

“A fun place to stay.”

Well placed for activities that we wanted to do. Walking, cycling and train up Snowdon , as well as a beach day. I think it would advisable to add a picture of the stairs, we managed fine (ages 23 - 64) but had I bought my elderly Mum it would have been a different matter. Enjoyed the mad sheep!

Our youngest was 4 and our oldest 78 and all managed the 10inch high steps albeit slowly for grandad. We read some previous reviews concerned about emergency phone contact and there was zero Vodafone but good EE/BT so emergency calls from all providers would connect.

“This is unique and historic property gave us an unforgettable experience in this beautiful corner of North Wales.”

There were a few minor quirks here and there, but these are to be expected with a property of this age and type. The smell of the boiler on the first floor took a little bit of getting used to, but was not a major issue once you'd adjusted to it (it was only noticeable on the ground floor itself). There are two main things that we need to point out. First is the lack of Wifi and reliable phone reception. This was both a blessing and a curse. If it is possible to get Wifi installed, I would recommend the owners to do this. The second main issue that needs to be pointed out is the steps. There is (naturally) one room per floor and each of the five floors require the climbing of 11 substantial stone-cut steps. That's 55 steps from the entry floor up to the lounge at the top! If you don't like steps or have mobility issues, then this property is probably NOT for you. The property is nicely furnished throughout. The stand-alone bath on the 4th floor and both the bedrooms were a joy (the beds are comfy and the rooms cosy) and the views out over the surrounding countryside fantastic. The weather for our stay was VERY welsh and being in a tower on top of a hill, we really felt the weather, but again, that added to the overall experience. Other reviews have mentioned barking dogs near by. We did hear them but it wasn't really an issue. Hence, overall, we REALLY enjoyed our stay here and it comes highly recommended.

Location was great, very peaceful, beautiful views. Such a unique property to stay in. Some practical points- the steps are pretty steep so need to take care on them and to be reasonably fit/ mobile. Some sort of covering for the windows in bedrooms and bathroom for privacy at night and to block out light would be good. If you visit in summer bring a sleep mask or you’ll be awake from the early hours. You do need to turn the entrance door handle once unlocked and it is quite heavy.

“We were fully aware of the rural and heritage nature of this property prior to booking and had carefully read the description provided.”

This property was not suitable for dogs was unclean and had many health and safety failings due to this we stayed for one night of a three night stay and would actively encourage others not to book this property we can provide photos to evidence issue mentioned below. Whilst not the responsibility of the property owners it should also be noted that throughout the night it was possible to hear the barking and hollowing of a large group of dogs kept outside and clearly nearby. Accuracy of listing - we were aware of ‘steep steps’ but not that they would be too narrow to enable a medium sized bag to be carried whilst the hand rail was also being used. Also reduced ceiling height on the stairs made it difficult for a 6ft 2 man to descend easily. The property was listed as being suitable for dogs except for lack of enclosed garden, however the gradient of the stones stairs made it impossible for our young medium size dog to descend, I’m unsure as to how anything other than a dog used to agility activities would manage. Although there was ‘no Wi-Fi’ listed in the details it was not made clear there was also no phone signal or landline at the property in conjunction with the health and safety shortcomings listed this concerned us greatly the guidance that a signal may be obtained from a top floor seemed inadequate should an emergency occur. Cleanliness - overall the property was clean however there were jars of rotting food in the kitchen cupboards, the surfaces in the kitchen were unclean, there was a leak under the kitchen sink. The hand rail that was essential for safe use of the stairs was sticky and felt unclean. There were large quantities on dead flies on window sills and many flies in kitchen at the windows and in the lounge at the top of the building a large colony of tiny flies that collected on the ceiling when the wall lights were turned on. Comfort - overall the property had a high level of comfort although window coverings of some nature would have been appreciated for modesty in both the bathroom and bedrooms particularly at night. Facilities and maintenance - ground floor there was a very strong smell of oil from the heating system, even with windows opened, at night when these were shut the fumes were noticeable on the stairs and particularly accumulated on the top floor. Kitchen - the kettle was unusable, it was not possible to pour the hot water safely. There were many chipped and broken items with sharp edges. Chairs at the table felt rickety and in need of repair. Nothing appears to have been PAT tested but is clearly over twelve months old (this was the case throughout the building) The portable heater did not work. The sieve/pans were corroded. The fire safety seemed woefully inadequate, the doors appeared to be thick enough to be fire safety doors but none were self closing we particularly noticed this as we had a dog with us and had to ensure each door was closed because of the nature of the stairs. Bathroom - the toilet only flushed intermittently, bathroom lacked a bin and privacy at night due to absence of window coverings surely this is a necessity in any property regardless of location or age of building. Bedrooms 1 & 2 - there was damp above the single beds causing the paint to bubble and fall on to the bedding again no window coverings for modesty when lights were on. Lounge - apart from the ridiculous quantity of flies and accumulating fumes from downstairs the lounge was well furnished and comfortable with incredible views. Roof - lack of compliance with health and safety measures regarding access to the roof is deeply concerning. The door is closed purely with a bolt which is easily opened. The handle for the roof door is not secure and fell from its mounting potentially leaving the door unable to be opened from the outside how you would be able to alert the other members of your party that you were stranded on the roof given the lack of phone signal is beyond me. There is a large drop from the doorway leading outside to the top step of the stairs, we have met stairs and roof access like this in other properties but with easy access in and out using a Yale type key preventing all of the above issues. The under floor heating did not work. By far the most concerning of all is that we felt unsafe due to the lack of provision of fire safety equipment and guidance. There seemed no realistic option of survival should the worst happen; a fire blanket and a small fire extinguisher were available. However fire doors that did not shut, no emergency lighting, no windows that opened adequately to enable escape, or fire protection sprinkler system such as used in other heritage properties we have rented. The boiler was clearly leaking or lacking a recent service and was enclosed with highly flammable curtains. Being aware of the regulations regarding the rental of property I would question if this would pass a fire safety inspection. We booked through Sykes because we respect the standard that you require for your property I do not believe that this building should be represented by yourselves unless considerable improvements are made and would urge you to inspect it at your earliest convenience.

“My wife and I visited Brynkir Tower for three nights in late November, and had a thoroughly enjoyable adventure.”

The architecture of the tower is spectacular, and the rooms are warm and comfortable. There is central heating on all but the top floor, where the lounge has an efficient log burning stove which quickly heats the room. More than enough logs were provided for our stay. The bedrooms and lounge are pleasingly furnished in a country cottage style. The kitchen is modern and well equipped, and the bathroom has delightful antique fittings. The only slight problem was that a tap in the hand basin was very loose and we had to take care when using this, but I am sure this can be easily fixed. The most spectacular feature of the tower is undoubtedly its staircase. From the property description I had been expecting a spiral stone staircase similar to a medieval castle, but the actual design is much cleverer than this. The stone walls of the tower are enormously thick, and the steep granite stairway is actually built inside the walls. The stairway moves upwards around each corner of the tower in turn as it rises from floor to floor. Journeys up and down the tower are great fun and give you a better workout than a trip to the gym. You can stop at each floor for the increasingly extensive views over the surrounding countryside. The road up to the farm and then to the tower is a bit rough, but no worse than most forestry tracks in North Wales. It is not a problem if you drive carefully. Although now very rural, the area around Brynkir Tower was clearly industrial in the past. There are a number of very interesting historical sites nearby. A few miles up Cwm Pennant is the Cwm Ciprwth copper mine, where a huge water wheel and pumping system for the mine shaft have been restored. Also nearby and not to be missed is the enormous Cwmystradllyn Slate Factory, which from the distance looks like the remains of a medieval cathedral. From here, you can walk along the route of the old horse drawn tramway to the large Gorseddau slate quarry at the head of the valley. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this amazing building and fascinating area.

Seeing it peeping over the trees as we drove towards it was very exciting. It is a very impressive structure with great views. It is very peaceful and secluded. It was warm and well appointed, comfy beds, very posh bath and cosy living room to relax in at the end of the day. There are a lot of stairs from the kitchen to the living room so make sure you don't forget anything when you bring up the snacks and drinks!

“We enjoyed our stay at the tower, despite the howling winds and hounds!”

It certainly is right up there with the most unique holiday stays we've had. Lucky to arrive in glorious early evening sunshine which really showcases the wonderful natural light that floods the rooms. The bath has to be our favourite feature. Climbing the steep stone stairs can be wearisome, but worth it for the experience of staying in a tower with magnificent views. As others have recommended, take soft bags rather than suitcases - much easier to carry upstairs, and we used a little cool bag to transfer drinks and snacks up to the living room each evening, which is lovely and cosy with the woodburner going. The lack of signage is a bit puzzling, but directions led us there regardless. Highly recommend visiting Portmeirion and Criccieth beach which are both a short drive away.

“We had an amazing week at Brynkir tower, which is located in a very beautiful part of Wales.”

There were some incredible walks right from the door, and the uniqueness of the tower, made it a holiday to remember. The stairs were tough, especially if you’d forgotten something, once you were up in the living room! So it’s probably not a great place for someone with health issues. There is also a farm about 300 m down the lane that houses a pack of hounds. These could be noisy at times (even occasionally through the night!), but didn’t bother us too much. The kitchen could’ve done with a little updating, but the rest of the tower was decorated and in- keeping with the building. Unfortunately, the double bed was also very squeaky, so could do with tightening up. Despite these little niggles though, I would definitely recommend staying here as we loved it… As did our dog Floki

“Overall we had a very enjoyable stay.”

We knew the property was going to be querky and isolated and this is what first attracted us to it and is the sole reason we booked with you originally. It did not disappoint at all in this respect. That said, if we are being picky we would make the following suggestions so future customers are not disappointed in their selection: 1. We knew there would be no WiFi but the owner should be more open that there is virtually no mobile signal on any floor. We had both Vodafone and O2 and we had zero data connectivity on any floor meaning that important family WhatsApps did not get through to us and without a landline either we were rather cut off; 2. The driveway would have been largely impassable to a low clearance vehicle and was unkind even to our SUV tyres. At the least we think an effort could have been made to clear loose stones and cut back the brambles from the driveway. Even walking out from the property was somewhat hazardous; 3. There was no warning that the neighbouring farm kept a large pack of hounds or refreshed their sheep stock during the week. The tranquility of the spot was frequently disrupted at all hours by loud barking and an unexpected level of sheep noise even overnight after a large number of sheep were brought in midweek; 4. The welcome pack is a little inadequate, being out of date and omitting useful information such as nearest store, pub/restaurant booking info (given that we had no data to look anything up on site). Particularly lacking was any information about walks and trails from the property. We had to buy an OS map and soon discovered public rights of way towards the mountains had been either deliberately blocked or were not maintained, which was an important loss of amenity given the location; 5. Whilst the overall cleanliness was very good, the cleaning team had missed about 100 cobwebs and spiders. We spent an hour with the Henry Hoover making the rooms and ceilings in particular habitable before we could unpack. The beds were comfy but extremely squeaky! Maybe the bed frames need tightening up and/or oiling? 6. Finally, we think a scale photo of the stairs would be sensible for would be guests. We expected the stairs to be steep and numerous but they are also narrow and uneven and the headroom on the upper floors is low, requiring people over 6 foot to almost have to go up on hands and feet.

We could see that in the 9 year gap there has been some decorating done and generally upkeep, but with the income being generated it would not take a lot to improve the kitchen facilities and still keep the character. That being said I still love this special place. One tip for visitors-do no bring cases, soft flexible bags will make unpacking (because of the stairs) much easier.

“Massively overpriced.”

So little care had been taken with the property to equip it properly and keep the internal furnishings in keeping with the beautiful, majestic building. The main living spaces; the living room & kitchen in particular were awful. At £600 per night for our stay, it was ludicrous. We had expected too to be able to go to the top of the tower to enjoy the views. Not happy at all. In detail, there was hardly any crockery, not enough mugs or cups. A cheap kettle that burned you with each and every use, spewing boiling water all over you. The upper bathroom was beautiful, in keeping with the property and the bedrooms were pleasant. I would have been happy to pay half of what we paid, around £300 per night, but any more was shocking. My daughters were so unset not to be able to stargaze from the roof. At that price, not a lot to ask.. Overall, exceptionally disappointing and left feeling swindled. But, the towers itself could be utterly magical if care was taken to make it so..,

“It was certainly an enjoyable experience.”

Quirky and delightfully different from normal holiday lets. The views were outstanding and we certainly were amused by the antics of the sheep, especially the one who everyday jumped the fence and trotted off down the drive. The stairs are somewhat of a challenge and you soon learn to take everything you could possibly want with you when you head to the living room, trudging back down to the kitchen becomes arduous as well as tedious very quickly. Absolutely loved the Welsh people who couldn’t have been more warm and welcoming. The dog was pampered and fussed over everywhere we went. No WiFi turned out to be an unexpected bonus. A glass of wine and a good book was much more pleasurable

“A lovely holiday.”

Gorgeous location and views. Beds very comfy. Towels super fluffy! Kids were sad not to have WiFi. Grown ups loved it!! . Very peaceful though occasional barking from pack of hounds in neighbouring farm. We went over to say hello and the dogs were super friendly, as was their keeper. Great if you like dogs and puppies!. Thanks to Richard the owner who was super quick to help when there were a couple of little glitches. He drove over instantly from Anglesey and brought us a new fridge! Wonderful if you want something very different though you need to embrace the stairs!! A big feature of the property and it gives you some great exercise!!

We arrived at night with the tower lit up in lights which looked magical. The 6 floors are not for the faint hearted though. Had everything you could have needed including a washing machine. Would definitely recommend to anyone who would like an adventure.

“I booked this as a surprise for my husbands birthday and boy was he surprised when I pointed it out from the lane below!”

The owners have made the most of the quirky building with each room feeling spacious for their size and containing everything you need for a comfortable stay. The views and sounds of nature from the tower were beautiful and so relaxing. The stairs which form part of the character of the building are not suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties but we quickly learnt that a cool bag is a very handy tool for taking the gin, tonic and snacks from the first floor kitchen to the top floor lounge for the evening : ). Thank you for the complimentary cake and milk.

The slate window sills and kitchen tops were gorgeous. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The cleanliness was good but could have done with high dusting for cobwebs and the occasional spider in the rooms. The surfaces were well cleaned. There was enough hot water for one bath a day so we shared! The stairs are very steep and I wouldn’t recommend it for smaller children ( my youngest is nine). It was a bit weird going to the loo without curtains but we got used to it! Two of the lights in the stairs had blown and didn’t get fixed while we were there but luckily not by the bedrooms. They beds were So comfy!

“We had a wonderful stay at Brynkir Tower.”

Our holiday was booked as a special birthday treat for my little girl and her face lit up when she saw the tower (even in the pitch black dark when we arrived) she felt like a real princess for the weekend. The views are amazing and waking up the next morning and looking out of the windows was just wonderful. The local pub (Goat Inn) serves delicious food and the staff are really helpful. We would love to stay in the tower again and definitely recommend. “The views were spectacular.”

Very comfortable beds and seats. Easy to get to and central to our holiday plans. Once we'd figured out we needed to turn the large metal door handle to get in everything else was very good. Thanks for the milk and cake. There is a series of laminated cards now explaining where everything is, how to work the fire and central heating etc. You need to move your own rubbish to the bin on the farm at the end of the lane so definitely take some bin bags. The steps inside are steep in places as they say but what else do you expect in such a building. There was mobile service in the lounge at the top but as you expect in such a secluded spot it's not great. TV is good and there are a few dvds for you to watch. To watch the sunset through the top windows was a sight I won't forget. The contact information is in the welcome pack but we didn't need to use it. No curtains was a bit strange at first but there really isn't any chance of people seeing in. Having a nice hot bath is one of the best ways to relax. If you are fit enough to climb the 5 flights of stairs, looking for a peaceful break in a beautiful area with the ability to switch off from the outside world then this is an ideal place to stay. When we reform to the area in the future we would definitely stay again and recommend it for other people. Thank you for a lovely time.

Furthermore a guest book would be good to write down experiences from guests. All in all a great stay in a wonderful tower.

The property

Brynkir Tower is a historic gothic folly perfect for a romantic getaway, located in the Eryri National Park. Built in 1821 to commemorate the knighthood of King George IV, the 20-metre-high tower has been thoughtfully-renovated using traditional materials after previously falling into disrepair, shedding off years of gothic decay to now exude a warm, welcoming atmosphere complete with elegant and inviting interiors that serve to provide a true castle feel! Located on the top floor, the sitting room has a wood-burning stove, a TV and DVD player, and 270-degree views. The well equipped kitchen/dining room has an electric cooker, microwave, fridge and dishwasher, as well as a pine dining table and chairs.

There is a double bedroom with a splendid brass bed is followed by a twin-bedded room.

The bathroom is located on the fifth floor and is complete with a cast iron roll-top bath where you can lie back, relax and watch the tree tops - sheer bliss! An internal spiral stone staircase leads you to each of the six rooms, with the sitting room at the top.

Situated right in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park there is so much variety here.

Make sure you’ve packed your walking boots to tackle a walk up Snowdon (the highest mountain in Wales) or take the easier option of the train!

The park has so much to offer everyone from stunning mountain walks, picturesque villages such as Beddgelert and an easy drive to lovely seaside towns like Criccieth.

This is a unique property in a great location! 2 dogs are allowed at this property *IMPORTANT* This property does not have a garden and is in a rural location, which can mean the occasional visiting sheep.

Please ensure for your own dog’s safety it is kept on a lead especially at lambing time.

The stone steps from floor to floor are steep and are not suitable for people with mobility issues.

Pretty little hamlet known locally as Garn, on the outskirts of Porthmadog, a short drive away. Enjoy lovely views over the mountains and Cwm Pennant. At Porthmadog enjoy a good selection of shops and cafes or take a ride on the Highland Steam Train. Or pop along to Criccieth and enjoy its lovely beaches and castle.
