  • Nigel

“We really liked this cottage - it was spacious and well-equipped (apart from one or two items: a colander, and bin bags, but this was no great problem).”

Good quality furniture and equipment. Beds were cosy and warm. The views of the coast and sunset were superb (seats and table outside very well placed). We are already planning our next trip.

The property

Waunfawr 2.5 miles.

Penrallt Fawr is a delightful all-ground-floor 18th century Welsh longhouse set on the outskirts of the quaint village of Rhosgadfan, near Waunfawr in Gwynedd.

Sleeping up to five guests, Penrallt Fawr is the perfect rural getaway, with easy access to all amenities and attractions, including Caernarfon Castle and Llanberis Lake Railway.

Not far from Snowdonia National Park, there are excellent walking and cycling opportunities straight onto the moorland from the gates of Penrallt Fawr.

Arriving at the property, you will find off-road parking for four cars, so you can unload your bags with ease, before stepping into the cottage to begin your holiday.

Look forward to firing up the wood burning stove in the sitting room, as you put your feet up on the plush sofas to enjoy a glass of wine paired with your favourite TV show.

When your guests are feeling peckish, whip up their favourite home-cooked meals in the fully equipped kitchen with handy dishwasher, before settling down to enjoy around the dining table, as you discuss the day's adventures.

As your eyes grow heavy, retreat to one of the three charmingly decorated bedrooms, where you can choose from a king-size, a 2' 6'' twin with zip/link (can be double on request) and a single sofa bed (best suited to a child), perfect for catching up on your rest.

Kick start your day with a refreshing shower before heading into the kitchen to prepare a morning coffee and wandering outside to enjoy the impressive views.

Venture out for the day and head straight to the popular town of Caernarfon, home to a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage castle and a magnificent waterfront, as well as, a delightful array of pubs, restaurants and independent shops - you will be spoilt for choice!

After taking a tour of the 13th-century castle with its on-site exhibitions and Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum, visit the historical Hanging Tower, a fortress which was previously a site used for executions, before stopping for a well-deserved drink at The Anglesey Arms overlooking the Menai Strait.

Make your next stop the rural village of Llanberis, where you can look forward to taking a leisurely stroll to see the Ceunant Mawr Waterfall, followed by a visit to the ruins of the once remarkable Dolbadarn Castle, where your canine companion is also welcome!

Take a tour of the National Slate Museum, housed in a Victorian Quarry, where you can expect to find some historical artefacts and informative activities to take part in.

Make sure to hop on the Llanberis Lake Railway for a nostalgic trip on a steam train, which shows you the very best views of Llyn Padarn, as you sit back and relax.

Take a step back in history and visit Cae'r Gors in Rhosgadfan, the childhood home of Kate Roberts, the Queen of Welsh literature, and find out what it was like living on a smallholding at the turn of the twentieth century.

Rhosgadfan and the surrounding quarries were also the location for the filming of Snowdonia 1890 aired on BBC Wales.
