Oriel Plas Glyn Y WeddwLlanbedrog, Llŷn Peninsula
Plas Glyn Y Weddw is a real treat! The Victorian Gothic, grade II listed dower house is a beautiful building in the small, quiet village of Llanbedrog. It is best known for being the oldest Gallery in Wales having celebrated its centenary-and-a-half in 2007, and is located in one of the best known holiday destinations; the Lleyn Peninsula! The gallery holds exhibitions by top artists and also offers annual activities and lectures, craft fairs and even concerts!
Come rain or shine, the picturesque gallery is the ideal venue as there are 10 gallery spaces to meander through when the rain is pouring and a picnic area in the gardens outside which can be enjoyed on a sunny day. At Plas Glyn Y Weddw you can cast your eyes on Lady Love’s original, and very impressive, personal collection of artwork and learn about the history of the Madryn Estate. A wealth of history, a craft shop, an award-winning tea room, child-friendly workshops and set in an area of outstanding natural beauty - Plas Glyn Y Weddw ticks all boxes!
Plas Glyn Y Weddw was originally built specifically to house Lady Love’s collection of artwork. She, Lady Elizabeth Jones Parry of the Madryn Estate, was very enthusiastic about art which is why Solomon Andrews jumped at the chance of buying the estate when it became available to purchase, with the vision of reopening it as an art gallery to keep in touch with its historic roots. It is now a public art venue showcasing ever-changing art exhibitions of premier artists from Wales, and further! Some of the artwork on display can also be bought if you have a keen eye for art! One of the most successful exhibitions is the annual summer exhibition which gets extremely busy with locals and holidayers, year after year.
Inside, alongside the artwork, you will be able to appreciate the beauty of the building itself! The large Jacobean staircase and exposed beams give the gallery a superb ambience when you think back to past of the previous owners! You will also notice several stained glass windows which clearly highlight the Madryn family’s ancestry, as does most of the architecture within. They were extremely proud of the fact that they could trace their roots back to the Medieval Lords of the Llyn and Eifionydd, and their influence on Plas Glyn Y Weddw is evident throughout.
Outside, the building is surrounded by gorgeous, well-maintained gardens as well as nearby woodland. You can enjoy the views of the surrounding bay and mountains at the garden picnic area, before heading off on the woodland trail which leads you to the famous ‘Tin Man’ sculpture on the Llanbedrog Headland. You can explore the headland and part of the Llyn coastal path here, or head down to Llanbedrog beach! It is the perfect ending to a perfect day of entertainment!
