Oriel Tonnau, Pwllheli, Llŷn Peninsula, North Wales

Oriel Tonnau is a friendly, intimate and welcoming gallery located on the high street of the old market town Pwllheli. The gallery, shop and tearoom is the perfect stop to relax and boasts the best of the locality; Welsh artwork, enthusiastic staff and locally sourced produce! The bright blue paintwork of the building is enough to draw anyone’s eye and the regular exhibitions and displayed works will certainly convince you to have a nosy inside.

The bright and chirpy gallery showcases a wide range of contemporary work as well as a variety of holiday souvenirs, all made by local crafters. Take a bit of the Llŷn Peninsula home with you with homemade gifts, or even request a commission inspired by the incredible seaside. Many of the artists do commission work so why not treat yourself to a ‘one of a kind’ painting? Whether you want to buy or just have a look, you can do it here and the wonderful staff make it a truly enjoyable experience.

The gallery was officially opened in 2006 by duo Llio Meirion and Myrddin Ap Dafydd, with the aim of making high quality Welsh creative talents accessible to all. Their collection of work consists of a broad range of contemporary work including original paintings, textiles, photographs, greeting cards and jewellery, so there is a little something for everyones’ taste. Other items to buy include pottery, prints, slate craft, acrylic blocks, soaps, and if you already have a picture which needs framing, they can do that too!

Oriel Tonnau is located on Penlan street in the heart of Pwllheli. Pwllheli is an old seaside port, and it was this that inspired the owners to create a seaside theme for the gallery. The name ‘tonnau’ translates as ‘waves’ in English, and the blue decor with art work of local seascapes really sets the holiday mood! Let the waves wash away your worries as you jump into the depths of the relaxing and informal atmosphere of this sweet gallery. Meander through what is on offer and take a pit stop at the cafe for a cup of tea and a quick nibble. Simply perfect.

The gallery holds exhibitions which change three times a year, presenting ocean artwork. Colorful or atmospheric, accurate or abstract, paints or ink, stitched fabric or basic sketches, they are all here. There is plenty of artwork of the surrounding areas too, including Borth Y Gest, Criccieth, Ynys Enlli and more. Visitors are spoilt for choice, and it is very easy to splash the cash. My only suggestion would be to watch your purses and wallets closely!
