What is the best way to travel from Ireland to North Wales?
A: The most effective method of travel is by ferry. There are daily services running between Dublin and Holyhead (Anglesey) via Stena Line and Irish Ferries. You are able to take your own car over on the boat with you, which can be a really cost-effective way of getting to and from the ports and around North Wales once you are here. You can also jump on a train, catch a bus or hire a car from the port in Holyhead.
Which airport is the closest to North Wales?
A: There are two relatively nearby airports to North Wales which are: (1) Manchester Airport which is around 1 hour 45 minutes from Anglesey, 2 hours from Snowdonia and 2 hours 30 minutes from the Llŷn Peninsula. (2) Liverpool John Lennon Airport which is around 1 hour 45 minutes from Anglesey, 1 hour 30 minutes from Snowdonia and 2 hours 25 minutes from the Llŷn Peninsula.
Alternatively, you could choose to fly into London. This can generally save you some money on your flights. Although London is much further away than Manchester or Liverpool, it has very good rail links and runs numerous daily services to North Wales from London Euston which can on average take around 3 hours and 50 minutes. These services stop at some of our key locations such as Conwy, Llandudno, Bangor and Holyhead. From here, you can access all of North Wales via train, car or bus as listed below.
How do I get from the airport to North Wales?
A: There are numerous public and private transport options open to you from both of the airports mentioned above. Below is a breakdown of the options by transport type and airport.
As North Wales is mainly rural in terms of transport links. Car hire is likely the most flexible and cost effective method of travelling to and from, as well as around, North Wales.

Travelling by train is often a popular choice due to the stress-free nature of just sitting down and taking in the stunning scenery of North Wales. Listed below are the options you can take:

Outlined below are the various primary stations used to get to various parts of North Wales:
The primary station you will need for Anglesey is Bangor train station. This station runs services to the following locations on a daily basis (Llanfairpwll, Llanfairfechan, Rhosneigr, Valley, Holyhead). A car, taxi or bus will be required to get from these stations to more specific locations and houses across Anglesey.
The primary station you will need for Snowdonia is either Bangor train station or Llandudno Junction. From here, a car, taxi or bus will be required to get from these stations to more specific locations across Snowdonia.
The first and most scenic of routes is via the Welsh Highland Railway. You will need to catch a train to Bangor first, and then catch a bus from Bangor to Caernarfon, LL55 2YD.
Here you can catch the fabulous vintage train to various locations across the Llŷn: Porthmadog, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Dinas, Waunfawr, Rhyd Du, Beddgelert and Porthmadog. From Porthmadog, you can then access Criccieth and Pwllheli via the national rail route. Combined journey time can range from 4 to 6 hours, although the views are definitely worth the wait!
The second route involves catching a train to either Crewe or Shrewsbury train stations via your arrival airport. You can then access many parts of the Llŷn Peninsula from here. Please be aware the average journey time is around 6 hours, this is much more significant in terms of travel duration and cost in comparison to car hire.

You may wish to travel by coach/bus from your arrival airport to North Wales. You can jump on a bus from Liverpool or Manchester after landing via National Express.
Manchester Airport has its own National Express service running from the airport. You can reach key primary locations such Bangor (Anglesey, Snowdonia) and Llandudno Junction (Llŷn Peninsula) for which you can then use local bus services to your final destination.
Liverpool Airport doesn’t have a National Express service running nearby. You will need to catch a train from the airport to Liverpool Central and then walk 10 minutes to ‘Liverpool coach station’ to catch services to North Wales as mentioned above.
Travelling by bus around North Wales can be much easier and economical than travelling any other way. With bus stops dotted around the whole of North Wales, it’s probably the most direct way of exploring the different parts of North Wales.
