“The property is a beautiful small cottage a 1-minute walk from the center of Bedgelert.”

There isn't any wifi (not a problem for me), but I hadn't considered checking the listing. We also had no signal whatsoever in the property or Bedgelert, just something worth knowing for planning days out and looking at potential places to go, this has to be done either while out elsewhere or at a pub with wifi in the village. We are with tesco so on the 02 network your mileage may vary. The property was clean and well-furnished and had all the basics you need in the kitchen for breakfasts and full evening meals when you're cooking. Being an old cottage the property is fairly cool so we had the electric fire on some evenings and mornings(our visit was in August although it was a bit of an overcast week). and we were being dragged out of bed at 630 by a 22-month-old so that may just be us. The ice cream shop and pizzeria/cafe in Bedgelert was excellent and I can't recommend the ice cream enough. There's also a small village shop that sells all the basics you need. Beautiful holiday cottage, clean and well-kept. Just know you may have no wifi or signal. Thanks

Our stay in Penlan was absolutely wonderful , perfectly situated on the edge of Beddgelert , so it was quiet and peaceful, with all the amenities of the village a 3 minute walk away , my son absolutely loved playing in the secure garden , the only negative we had was that there wasn’t an iron , but we would take one with us on a return visit, would very much recommend staying here, and would love to visit again

“Bedding was too warm for the time of year (late June) a thinner quilt was required.”

Heating not required so had to turn it off as much too warm at night. Bottom bunk very creaky (top not used). Difficult reversing out of the parking space as neighbour's vehicles restricted space. Another small or a medium saucepan instead of one of the large ones would be more practical.

“The cottage is so lovely.”

Very clean and had everything needed for a weeks break. There is no wifi which the listing says it doesn't so no surprise and was actually great to disconnect. EE internet and mobile stength excellent. Such a beautiful view from sitting room window and the bench on the patio was a real suntrap in the afternoon. Just a brief walk into a stunning village, beautiful river and we was so lucky to have amazing sunshine all week. Perfectly located for all North Wales. Unfortunately already fully booked for the same week next year. Only one downside which is nothing to do with cottage was the building works next door. Builders showed up 8am Monday morning and had their music blaring and banging and crashing around. The weekend was so peaceful, no road noise etc so think it was more noticeable because of how tranquil the location is. Will definitely be back.

“The property is in a fantastic location for walking BUT the property as no WiFi and the Mobile Phone signal is non existent - this was not indicated in the booking details which I think is misleading.”

Most people booking a holiday cottage today would implicitly assume that the property as WiFi unless explicitly stated otherwise. Bearing this in mind I would have expected some DVDs, books, and games at the property to keep the kids occupied. Additionally, although 4 people can stay there was limited seating outside - one bench for 2 people is not adequate for a large garden. The property needs some updating inside and outside, but if you want to be off grid for a week or two you would not find a better location.

“Penlan is a gem - surrounded by beautiful views and wildlife (birds and bats) We were lucky with the weather and when the sun was out the garden is a sun trap.”

Our dog loved the garden and walks so much she didn't want to get in the car. The cottage has a special feel and is well equipped - always nice to have a cafetiere

“Lovely, cosy cottage, within easy driving reach of many great places to visit.”

Set in stunning scenery, with the shops and eateries of the village only five minute's walk away, Penlan was a wonderful place to while away a week. Speak to the lovely staff in the tourist information office for details of when and to where you can catch a steam train from the village station for a day trip out - it really is worth doing!

“Rupert the Bear Cottage: Penlan.”

St in Beddgelert a great village for exploration or coffee and ice-cream. Set on a small hill not too close to any neighbours. The sound of the River below from the front door or if you sleep with the front window open. Brill. Some Rupert posters and mementos and a blue plaque to Alfred Bestall on the cottage. You feel part of 1940's history staying here. Cottage is small; but most or all you need is there. No wi-fi and no phone signal for me (I was on o2) so be aware of this if you cannot "bear" to be parted from the Matrix for a few days or hours. I got all my text messages daily on driving out of Beddgelert enroute to Porthmadog. Rained all week (and the car filled with water somehow) but this just means lost of impromptu waterfalls appear on all the hillsides and look glorious. Make sure you visit Plas Brandanw and Portmeirion if you are interested in television history and the Prisoner or the Saint or Dr Who (all filmed at least once at Portmeirion). Wales: what's not to like. Penlan. Would I go again? Yes. Enjoy, Tim.

Ideal location. It was a little smaller than I thought. The only issue was internet. My EE network worked but the other two guests on Sky and 02 could not get a signal. Beddgelert is a beautiful town and ideal for touring North Wales.

Beautiful village with good local resources. The information pack on arrival was comprehensive so there was no need for any handover. The cottage was comfortable and well presented. I had an excellent week up in the mountains and this cottage was the ideal base from which to start and end the day. Will definitely look to stay here again. Two of my favorite walks in the area start from Beddgelert (one to the summit ofMoel Hebog, and the other down the river and up onto Cwm Bychan to the copper mine) so no need to drive on those days.

The lack of WiFi was a bit annoying but unlike other reviewers I found I had good phone signal and some internet on my mobile with EE. Storage heaters were not adequate but after a while the electric oil heaters provided to cover this did do the job.

“This was our second stay at this lovely characterful cottage.”

We love the close proximity to the village and walks on our doorstep. This second stay was as good as the first. However, as previous holiday home owners and who have stayed in holiday cottages all over the country; a small welcome pack would have been very much appreciated. People travel to this area from long distances as we did and at least some fresh milk would have been nice. Also a hairdryer. The lack of a signal and WiFi a bit difficult but free WiFi in all the cafes, pubs and even the shop. A great week.

Off road parking makes life easy. The facilities are generally good. As other reviewers have said the double bed is not comfortable. A new/ better mattress is required. Some microwave safe containers and pepper and salt would improve the experience. There is also a leak in the skylight in the kitchen and water drips in sometimes.

Lovely and clean and all we needed for a fantastic stay. Great view from the cottage, plenty of walks and easy access to the village. Definitely would book again. We left a note to say the big green bin wasn't collected on bin day. So hopefully it will go next time. Other bins all collected fine.

A really nice cottage which is well situated close to the range of village amenities, the Welsh Highland Railway, local walks and stunning routes to further afield locations. We also enjoyed learning a little about Alfred Bestall. We identified a few little snags during the stay all of which didn't detract from it and will hopefully be addressed soon. We also recognise other comments about the bed (nice but soft mattress, with low frame) and the thin bedroom curtains which may be an issue for some although we were okay with both.

“Perfect for a relaxing holiday.”

This was our second time here, and we’ve booked up again for next year. The cottage is really cosy, and feel’s almost like home. Extremely peaceful, all you can hear most of the time are birds tweeting, and the river flowing. The view of Moel Hebog from the front door is just amazing, especially in the morning. The cottage has all the basic facilities for a stay, although you may want to take a sharp kitchen knife with you as the ones supplied are quite blunt (Not sure if this is due to h&s reasons). Phone signal on O2 is non-existent, but EE is very good. If anything, the bedroom could do with some thicker curtains, as it gets very light early in the morning during summer time, but then I’d probably miss the sunrise over the mountains.

“The property is in a wonderful location with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and walking distance to the shops and pubs in the village.”

There is a lovely river running through the village which was great to take a dip in after a long day of exploring. The bench seat at the front of the property is an ideal place to have your morning coffee listening to the river. The property itself is functional and clean, however, the mattress in the master bedroom is very uncomfortable. The kitchen was well equipped although the knives were blunt and could do with being replaced. There is a washing machine but no tumble dryer. There is a washing line to the rear of the property for hanging your washing and there were also a set of airers to use inside if the weather was against you. The rest of the property is dated and could do with a refresh, however, it is a great base to explore Snowdon and the surrounding areas. We made use of the Sherpa bus service which helped with dealing with parking issues. If you want to eat out and need a place that is dog friendly beware as the pubs in the village only serve food up to 8pm and even that is not guaranteed. On our last night there one of the pubs did not have their chef and so were not serving food, the other dog friendly establishment decided to stop serving food at 7pm. This was a Thursday night, not a Sunday night. So definitely give yourself some other options if eating out.

“Great location.”

Cosy cottage and immaculately clean and tidy. Close to Beddgelert pubs and restaurants and to hikes - one even starts outside the front door. Lovely summer property. Probably would not stay again in winter as heating the cottage is difficult. Only the “supplementary” heater in the living room and the bathroom heater worked effectively. Other rooms were cold. Of note there is no WiFi or mobile signal at the cottage ( or in the village) and no landline. This is relaxing at first but would be a challenge for longer stays as looking up opening times of attractions etc. requires a trip to the pub to use WiFi.

“We had a lovely stay at penlan cottage used as base to visit family.”

House was very clean on arrival and kitchen equipment was sufficient. Heater in the bedroom wasn't working however the fire in the living room was enough to heat the living room and main bedroom with the door open it was so cosy. No WiFi in the house which was fine, nice for the peace, be aware though there is no phone signal either so won't be able to use data. We have family who live in the village so knew this in advance but we had forgot so contacting them was difficult. Lovely little house in a great location for the village and walks. Garden was great for our little dog, lots of land and fully enclosed, there is a light at the backdoor but doesn't reach far so take a torch. Only thing missing I would say is a washing maiden/clothes horse. A washing machine is a huge perk with a dog as we always bring our own towels etc but there was nowhere to put anything to dry in the winter (washing line in the garden for summer) so it wasn't used. We will look to rebook again next year as it was perfect for us to stay and get about to see family in the surrounding areas.

The kitchen was well equipped and bedrooms good size. The double bed is very low and uncomfortable, the worst bed of any holiday cottage we've stayed at! Lack of wifi got to be a real pain, especially once we had a medical problem and needed to find out info and contact people. No books or games or dvds so pack plenty.

“Just returned from a beautiful sunny week in Bedgellert.”

Lovely cottage in amazing setting. Surroundings are beautiful, moutain views from the windows, yet only a minutes walk to the river and village which has a wonderful river for dogs and children to paddle in! Shops, pubs, cafés and a great ice cream parlour. The main downside for us was the bed. My husband woke up every morning with back pain and ended up sleeping in the pull out guest bed in the lounge instead. Apart from that, the cottage is lovely. I would suggest a parosol for sitting outside and an outdoor table and chairs. The bench is ok, but not particularly comfortable. We had to come indoors after a while, whereas a parosol would have meant we could enjoy the weather/views for longer. Would 100% recommend, but please improve the mattress!

Perfect, secluded location in beautiful surroundings yet only a 5 min walk from the village. Great views from the front door and we really enjoyed our morning coffee accompanied by the beautiful dawn choruses. Only negatives were no WiFi or Virgin Mobile connection but we had a great week despite that. Suggestions would be supplying an Iron and ironing board, hair dryer, bird table in the garden and maybe board games for a rainy day. All in all we had a great holiday though. Thank you.

“The house and the place in which it is located is great, close to shops, restaurants, etc.”

As for cleanliness: moldy curtains and walls in the rooms. In the kitchen, dirty cups in shelves, too small kitchen equipment. However, the worst thing was that at night, large and small snails were coming out from under the furniture in the kitchen, during the week of my stay I caught and threw away 16 snails. I have taken photos as if someone would not believe it. In general, I rate the stay at home as average.

There were little things missing like clothes pegs, egg cups, kitchen tongs would be good too! The cottage was lovely, however the windows in the living room and bedroom have failed glass units which have condensation inside, this really spoilt the fantastic views from inside to the mountains opposite. The front door doesn't seal properly which is a major problem, this is why it gets quite cold in the cottage. The walks around the village and in the hills close by are stunning and the village its self is lovely and friendly.

“The hot water failed on the second day, so on a three day break, our only break this year, we had no hot water for two days.”

We understand things happen, but what we don’t understand is the total lack of help from the caretaker who was the contact in the welcome folder. I was told nothing could be done until the day we were going home and that the shower was working, no explanation as to why the water couldn’t be fixed. He lives nearby but asked me to check the consumer unit, which I did and it was fine. I told him my wife needed a bath as it helps her fibromyalgia and that we would leave early, he replied “ok”. Everything was fine with the cottage itself and we would recommend it, but the lack of help did spoil our only break this year having worked all through lockdown as key workers.

“I have stayed at Penlan for 5years in total because I love the cottage and surroundings so much.”

So it is with a heavy heart to see that the owners do not appear to have invested anything in the cottage facilities for over this period of time. The cottage decor is looking tired and so does the furniture. The mattress in the double room is very worn and sags in the middle so much that if I laid on one side of the bed I would roll right into the middle because of this. The mattresses in the back bedroom with the bunk beds weren't any better and are in a bad state. Also this bedroom lacks a bedside table and has a folding chair with a lamp on instead ! Totally unacceptable for the amount of money being charged. There is no mirror in this bedroom either and just needs a few little tweaks to complete this bedroom. Now onto the living room the faux leather sofas are so uncomfortable and could do with better and more cushions, the two cushions in the cottage presently are scruffy and stained so I used my pillows. The cottage lacks warmth not from heating but furnishings a couple of throws and a coffee table to complete the room (had to put drinks on floor) On a plus side on the surface everything is spotless but don't look behind the furniture you have been warned. I notice that Penlan is advertised for 5 people but from my experience this would be too crowded and the cottage would comfortably have 3 people staying there. It seems to me the owners have turned a blind eye on Penlan and just let the money roll in but this customer has had enough and sadly will not be returning again as I can find better value for money

“This cottage needs some tlc.”

The mattresses are not good on any of the beds and I spent the week sleeping on the bottom bunk which was my only option. The sofas need updating as they sink at the back. The cottage is in an excellent place and we loved the walk down to beddgellert for dinner in the evenings. Would like to say we would be back but not this time. No welcome pack either and the parking is not ideal as the neighbours have carers in and block the drive.

We had a wonderful time in this incredible landscape. A couple of tweaks to the cottage would have made the week really special. Although we knew there would be no wifi or phone coverage, we found this was more of a disadvantage than we had anticipated. In winter months when local venues often vary their opening times, it was very difficult to find out accurate information. We would happily have paid a little more to have this facility. I was disappointed to find that the stove equipment in the photographs is no more than a flame-effect unit which does not provide heat. In fact the cottage is heated by three storage units which aren't robust enough for most people's needs. I can't describe the cottage as cosy. The patio had been fenced off so that it was not possible to gain access to it. It would be a lovely place to pause. There were no house notes available nor anything to welcome us on arrival. These things are not make or break but their absence contributed to a general sense of apathy towards the guests - a shame in a cottage with such potential.

We like to walk, hike, kayak and swim, and this location is perfect for all of these. The cottage has all the facilities we needed, it was especially useful to have a washing machine. This is our second time staying in Penlan and we do not usually go to the same location more than once, so that is probably the best recommendation of all!

“Penlan is a lovely cottage.”

Just a few minor things would make it perfect. A new mattress on the bottom bunk as the springs can be felt. A clothes horse to dry clothes indoors after using the washing machine as it’s not always possible to hang them outside. An iron. WiFi connection in the cottage as no phone signal. Bottom branch of tree pruned as gets caught in car tailgate. In spite of these niggles we had a wonderful holiday in the most beautiful surroundings. Would recommend future visitors to sit outside on a clear night and look at the stars. What an awesome sight. Now looking forward to next year. God willing!

“There were no towels at the property.”

It was difficult to contact the number as there is no signal for mobile phones and no Wi-fi in the cottage. I had to use a phone box. I was then told no towels are provided. I was not informed of this beforehand and for two hundred pounds a night is incredible. We then had to travel to find towels to purchase instead of enjoying the holiday. The cottage should provide Wi-fi or at least this information should be published before booking. The bed was of poor quality- for the price it should be a good quality bed. The garden was a wasteland covered in mown long grass, probably cut for the first time this year, with no flowers at all. The cottage itself is lovely and is in a beautiful location and it is a shame that the owners put in zero effort to made it welcoming.

BEDROOM IS VERY NICE ALSO WITH A GOOD VIEW OF THE MOUNTAINS. “As we suspect no one had been in the cottage the previous week, it took a little warming up given the recent snow etc.”

Whilst there are storage heaters in the rooms, they don't really seem to be man enough to warm the place quickly - the same goes for the electric stove heater in the lounge which worked intermittently. However, as we have done in the past when renting in a mountain area cottage, we had taken a couple of small portable fan heaters to help and the place was soon warm. The cottage was small, clean and functional and in an area we know very well. Although it states that Penlan could house up to five adults, that would be quite cramped - as two adults plus a large dog, it was comfortable for us. As per some other comments by past renters, wi-fi access would be appreciated - there is apparently a land line into the cottage so I cant see a major issue? We are looking at potentially renting Penlan again later this year.

The cottage has been modernised but to a cheap and very basic standard, also the hot water tank wasn't big enough to fill the bath. The bed was uncomfortable and very low to the ground and would not recommend staying there if you suffer with a bad back.

This cottage, formerly the home of Rupert Bear author and illustrator Alfred Edmeades Bestall, has two cosy bedrooms, a double, and a bunk bedroom with additional pull-out bed, as well as a family bathroom.

BEDDGELERT

Porthmadog 7.7 miles; Caernarfon 12.8 miles.

The picturesque village of Beddgelert lies in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park at the foot of Mount Snowdon. Beddgelert is a bustling village with arts and craft shops, tea rooms, welcoming pubs, including Saracens Head and the Royal Goat, and restaurants, centred around the Afon Glaslyn river. A leisurely stroll along the river will take you to the Aberglaslyn Pass, one of North Wales’s most famous beauty spots. The Welsh Highland Steam Railway passes through the village on its journey from Porthmadog to Caernarfon. Beddgelert is famed for its monument to the Welsh Prince Llewelyn's dog, whom the Prince killed thinking it had attacked and killed his son, only to discover afterwards it had been defending his son from a savage wolf attack.
