Did you know?

Beaumaris is home to the last of Edward I’s ‘Iron Ring’ castle fortresses. It was built by the English monarch to suppress the rebellious Welsh in the 13th century. The town’s name comes from the french ‘beau marais’ - ‘beautiful marsh’, reflecting the French language used by the English court at that time. The castle last saw action during the English civil war, and is well preserved for visitors. Some interesting town traditions: on Boxing Day, 26th December, the town’s mayor throws hot pennies to children from the balcony of the Bulkeley Arms Hotel.
