Set at the starting point of the sweeping Mawddach Estuary and caught between Snowdonia’s sea and mountain scenery, the small, peaceful village of Llanelltyd rests amongst climbing green hills, offering a perfectly peaceful holiday location for touring this vibrant area. The crumbling Cymer Abbey, a 12th century romantic ruin, and St Illtyd’s Church, thought to be one of the oldest in Wales, stand testament to the village’s past. There are plenty of pretty walks in the area with Llanelltyd Bridge, an ancient attractive footbridge crossing the shallows of the River Mawddach, offering the chance to settle on the shingled riverside in view of the nearby mountains. The River Mawddach hurries past, heading to the mouth of its estuary, with the Mawddach Trail, leading alongside the marbled, silky sands, offering a rewarding route for explorers. Llanelltyd has its own restaurant, which proudly offers panoramic sights and fine local fare, plus there are plenty of places to eat, interesting shops and quirky cafes to be found in Dolgellau, just two miles away. Barmouth is a short drive away, where you can enjoy a fun-filled family day beside the sea finished with traditional fish and chips on the harbour front beside its vast Blue Flag beach. Within easy driving distance guests can uncover much of Snowdonia's spectacular coast, take a nostalgic train trip by steam or conquer Cader Idris, Snowdon’s quieter counterpart.
