“Pros Attractive, comfortable, well located for exploring North Wales, only 5 min drive down the hill and you're on main roads linking to all major tourist spots.”

I could reach a huge variety of stunning places in 30-45 minutes including beautiful beaches, mountain views and amazing castles. Very nice having the candles and log fire. Owners very responsive to issues. Cons (Minor) Stairs - they are steep, wooden with grippers and do not have full treads all of the way across to allow space for your knee/shin as you push up. It feels more similar to climbing step ladders although appreciate they are strictly speaking stairs and there are strong hand ...

It feels more similar to climbing step ladders although appreciate they are strictly speaking stairs and there are strong hand rails. It may be beneficial to post a photo of them front on so people truly know if they will be ok or not. It is not simple when you want to take things up and down the stairs (eg big bag of clothes, a cuppa) as they are easier to climb holding with both hands. I am not super fit and have slightly painful knee and was fine walking up local mountain footpaths but found the stairs needed my full concentration and could be uncomfortable especially coming down. If you think you'll get really achy legs or blind drunk then suppose you may want to sleep downstairs those nights. Having said all of that, I enjoyed my holiday and the bed upstairs is very comfortable so worth the climb! (Minor) - the snug smelt of dogs on my visit. Sorted with a plug in air freshener but prob best folk know in case it would really bother them.

“Y Garreg Fawr is cosy retreat perfection!”

Not long returned from my fifth stay here with my two dogs. The cottage has everything you need, plus an amazing bath, shower, and log burner for the ultimate relaxation. The hosts are super helpful, with nothing too much trouble and the location for Anglesey access is perfect. Can't wait to be back in 2026.

“Have stayed at numerous places over the years in similar properties Location, brilliant, "yn y Nefoedd", Heaven Facilties, everything we needed Owners, available, there was no need to contact them; did do so to thank them and compliment on their fantastic property Only one downfall, having booked the property i needed to see if a change could be made to the booking.”

It took five days for a conversation to be effected and I remain persuaded it was not with a live human, ai. Sadly, I will not do business with this facilitator again, never is a strong word, but ....

“The cottage is cute and the location is lovely but it lacked a personal touch.”

It would be really great if in winter the heating could be on for when you arrive as it was reading 6 degrees inside when we checked in and it took until the next day to get properly warm which wasn’t a very pleasant welcome. There is a log burner which is lovely but there were only 3 damp logs and a pile of damp kindling which you couldn’t start a fire with, wouldn’t be too unreasonable to leave a bag of dry wood for guests to burn. The freezer was so overly frozen the door wouldn’t close so we had to spend time chipping away at the ice to close the door when we arrived. It would also be helpful if there were better instructions for the projector, we couldn’t connect a USB so could only watch the provided DVDs if we had of known we’d have packed something we actually wanted to watch.

Hi Abbie, thanks for your feedback we will have to take a look at the hive heating system and see if we can get one installed for next winter, the Logs are from the cupboard next to the fireplace so they are quite dry, I appreciate Log burners are not for everyone. I apologise for the Freezer someone had left it setting 5 prior to your visit which had caused the build up of ice, this has now been rectified and set back to level 1. their is a USB Port on the back of the TV im sorry you didn't find that. Regarding the Projector it can be a bit fiddly to use I will look to add some instructions for future guests. Property Owner

“The cottage was cosy and quaint as described but well appointed with a lovely enclosed garden safe for dogs.”

The cottage was clean and well looked after, and had everything we needed. The booklet the owner provided was very helpful and contained info about how things in the cottage worked as well as info and numbers of local doctors, vets, nearest supermarkets etc, as well as local places to eat. The log burner was amazing and kept the cottage lovely and warm during the evening. The stairs to the bedroom took some mastering when we arrived but we got used to them after a few goes. All in all we had an amazing break in beautiful surroundings and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Y Garreg Fawr.

“I am grateful I found this location last minute after being battered by the winds while camping.”

The cottage is warm well appointed and has all the facilities required to make a stay comfortable. It was tidy but unfortunately not clean. I made the mistake of moving the rug in the downstairs room to open up the beds, and there was a so much hair, probably dog hair. So much hair on the couch, the bedding everywhere really. This just soured things a bit for me.

“A lovely cottage, in a lovely location.”

It's compact but has everything you need and has been well thought out. We didn't get to use the projector as it was too light in the evening but the snug was lovely to cuddle up with a film after a long day of hiking. We bought a couple of DVDs to watch and added them to the collection for others! A great place for 2 adults and 2 dogs.

Sensitively restored, we particularly liked the bathroom (great shower with plentiful and immediate hot water). The owners were super helpful and quick to respond to the couple of questions we had. We also got lucky enough to have sunshine allowing for two evening meals outside listening to the birdsong.

“The cottage was lovely, so quiet and peaceful the fire was lovely and the layout works really well.”

We did find the bed a bit hard and pillows flat, but that’s a personal preference. Some beautiful walks from the cottage and not far from snowdon. We loved our stay and can’t wait to rebook in the near future, when hopefully less rain, to explore north Wales further. Owners are lovely and the information folder they have made is great help.

“Lovely property, has everything you need.”

We stayed here for 5 nights 2 adults one child and two dogs. It is small and compact but when you are only in it for a short while it doesn’t matter. There is a co-op in Penygroes which is great for all food and has a cash machine. We also got Chinese from the Beijing which was brilliant. It cost £ 20 to get to the centre of Carnarfon, we got a lift there with friends staying near by! Best place to eat is Black Boy, food is fab and filling. Thank you

“I stayed here as a base for a photographic trip around the area.”

It was perfectly central for the north coast, Lyn Peninsula, Angesey and Snowdonia. With just myself staying here it was great for coming and going, sometimes at odd hours (to catch dawn and dusk), without disturbing anyone. Having the central heating was essential and the old stone cottage soon warmed up. The bed was really comfortable, the kitchen facilities basic, but fine. My only very minor grip was that the sofa was a little uncomfortable, but I didn't use it much anyway. Altogether a great place for what I needed it for.

“Although I've got lots to say, it is a beautiful cottage so i hope you dont take offence, i Just felt I'd of liked to of known before to make a more informed decision plus give you some feedback on our views .”

The Adjacent road was quite busy at certain times due to bus route and quarry lorries, it was so busy when we arrived that we , unsuccessfully, tried to swap booking but it quietened off through the week, so may have been due to a diversion. Much smaller than expected but perfect for a couple , although don't underestimate the steepness of paddle style staircase, especially in the dark when going toilet at night, I ended up sleeping on day bed downstairs which was ridiculously uncomfortable and needs the mattress replacing as you can feel every slat. Plug hole in bath was filthy, resulting in bath filling during a shower, if I'd had rubber gloves I'd of cleaned it. No recycling facilities. The sky light in living room rendered the projector pointless as it was still light out at 10pm and there was no way to shade it. The blind in bathroom doesn't go right down, meaning that the unexpected visit from the gas bottle man Was extremely uncomfortable while I was using the loo. The sofa was very hard and uncomfortable and the rug in the snug just needs binning. Shop close by, great location to walk dogs on path behind cottage. Internet connection was great. TV allowed us to plug I our roku stick to use netflix/amazon. Kitchen facilities were great. Everything I needed ( except maybe tongs) . Oven tray was also dirty.

Hi Jennifer,I had to think about my response for a little while before writing back to your comments. As you where a late booking we had the cottage made ready for you the night before your arrival, you can see in the photos that the main bedroom is accessed by the alternate staircase which we state in the description as being steep. The Road is a B Road and I welcome anyone to look on google maps and see its location, yes there is a bus route which is really handy for some guests, it goes past the house once an hour. The Lorry's do come by less frequently as the Cottage is near some working slate quarries, I can only presume as you say there must of been a few coming by at once for you to feel this is a busy road, its is not in my opinion a busy road at all but we are in a rural location. I will take a look at the mattresses and the floor mat in the Snug, we haven't had any negative comments before regarding them. I apologise for the bath plug being dirty I will pick this up with my cleaner who cleans the property. With Regards to Recycling facilities the Yellow and Green Bin is provided by a private waste collection service who recycle all the contents, it is collected every Tuesday. The Skylight is to high to have a manual blind fitted, I will look into this as you are the second guest to mention it in three years but i'm happy to attempt to address it, I have now fitted a new blind to the bathroom, the Gas delivery normally takes place prior to handover but I know Calor have been really busy recently and cant commit to a certain delivery date, this is the same for all properties with LPG Boilers. I'm sorry you felt the settee was hard, I don't find this the case personally, we have recently bought new cushions and throws for this. I have recently added some new Tongs to the kitchen and three New Oven Trays in the last week. I'm glad you found the location great for dog walking, it's one of my favourite things to do with my dogs when i'm at the cottage also, the internet is top notch and better than my home WiFi, I'm glad you found that too and I'm glad you found the kitchen well stocked, as I said above I've recently added a few more items also. “The main living area, sitting room and kitchen, are grubby and worn looking.”

The small TV room is also dingy. Both are lacking in care and upkeep, very disappointing for the cost paid. The garden is nothing like shown in the photos on the website. The drive/pathways have weeds growing on them and it again looks lacking in care. A gardener was cutting the grass on my arrival and had just put weed killer down on the paving areas even though I had a dog included in my booking. It was impossible for the dog not to walk on the areas where the weed killer had been applied. Luckily there was heavy rain overnight which probably washed the weed treatment away. I wouldn’t recommend anyone I know to stay there.

It's in a great location, very peaceful, but close enough to local amenities, towns, the beach and walks. Considering it is such an old building I think it's cleverly designed to make great use of the space. It is well equipped and clean. The enclosed garden was ideal for our dog to roam safely. Would be 10/10 if a blind was fitted to the kitchen ceiling window as it was very bright early in the morning.

“The most delightful and romantic cottege, in a great location for walks, beach vistis or just to lock the outside world away to relax.”

The cottege had everything you could possible need, a real home from home. Although we didn't take our 2 boys the snug room would have been ideal for them to chill and sleep in. Shower was very powerful and had plaenty of hot water. Enough fire wood was left to get us started and the local gargag stocks sacks of wood to top up if needed. Coffee pods were also a great little extra touch. Bed was really comfy. After reading some reviews about the TV and projector we took our own fire stick and all worked great with no issues. We are already looking at dates to return. Do not hesitate to book this cottege as you won't be disappointed.

“A wonderful break over Christmas.”

We were so impressed with the cottage and all of its facilities, it is decorated beautifully and was absolutely perfect for the 2 of us and our dog. Everything has been thought of here and we really appreciated the small touches like dishwasher tablets, coffee pods and even bubble bath. The location is perfect, so quiet but yet not out of the way and the garden is large and secure. Do not hesitate to book this property, you will not be disappointed!

“We had a lovely stay at Y Garreg Fawr last week.”

The small and unique cottage made for a brilliant base camp for exploring Snowdonia. The walks from the doorstep allowed us to explore the countryside and hike up the local hill of Moel Tryfan, a small but steep hill that provided amazing views across to the coast. We took on the challenge of Mount Snowdon as it is just 30mins away by car which meant that the climb was easily doable within the day. The large bath is lovely to relax in after a long day of exploring before curling up on the sofa to watch a film in front of the projector and wood burner. Our only suggestion would be for an upgrade on the TV to something that has Netflix and other streaming services. Luckily we brought the laptop and a cable so we were able to stream Netflix and the like through the projector on the cold autumn evenings. Charlie was a brilliant host and was able to sort any issues we had straight away. We would definitely recommend Y Garreg Fawr to anyone looking to explore the Snowdonia National Park

Hi Simon, thanks for your feedback, the Projector as you say is not powerful enough in the Daytime but it's great of an evening to watch films on, you can even plug in an Amazon firestick if the DVD collection is not sufficient. The Cottage is 160 years old, and folk were slightly shorter when it was built so the shower head is quite low, but this is more dictated to by the ceiling height, we appreciate that a roll top bath isn't for everyone but after a day hiking in the hills a deep warm bath is just the thing. Glad we had our son with us to operate the projector! Had everything needed but hand soap was almost empty and no store close by to stock up. The paddle steps would be difficult for some to use- although we found them just about manageable.

“We had a wonderful stay in Y Garreg Fawr in mid August.”

The property is in a beautiful location - very quiet with lots of walks from the doorstep and only a short easy drive from many tourist attractions. The property itself is very well equipped and although small the 4 of us (2 adults, 12 and 15 year old boys) (plus a dog) found it very comfortable. The only reason we didn't give it 5 stars was because, although the bathroom and kitchen were clean upon arrival, there were dog hairs on the soft furnishings in the snug and sitting area and the rug by the sofa needed a good clean to remove the white dog hairs. The owner responded promptly to our question about the bins. Despite the dog hairs we would recommend to others.

“The cottage was in a beautiful location and in easy reach of the main attractions in the local area.”

Beach was approx. 15 min easy drive and Caernarfon was about 20 - 25 mins away, Anglesey was about 30-35 min away. Breath taking scenery on the doorstep and a useful walk for the dog in the fields at the back of the cottage. Accommodation was well presented, clean and well kept. Had everything one would need for a holiday away from it all. Garden was a good size for our Springer Spaniel and secure as well. Bedroom was a good size, but stairs took a little getting used to because of the steepness and the alternating tread pattern of the stairs. We enjoyed our stay, but we had a minor issue with the projector and the TV in the other room. We were unable to get the sound to work on the projector, when we used the Firestick as suggested in one of the previous comments. We could not find any instructions regarding the projector and how to use it. We were unable to get regular channels on the TV and resorted to using the firestick in the back of the TV, which meant we had to sit in the small room all the time and unable to utilise the other larger room at all. Unfortunately, we had 2 days of heavy rain, (no one's fault) so felt a little cramped in the small room. Overall, a good cottage with minor issues for us.

The bed was comfy, all cooking appliances and utensils were provided, the bathroom was beautiful with a great shower and a gorgeous bath for a soak after a hike! We loved the snug space, it was a great space to watch a film together on an evening. Highly recommended as everything was thought of!

“Great place and location to enjoy a holiday!”

Highly recommend the cottage. Spacious garden and well equipped cottage to suit most of your needs. Loads of places to visit nearby for fun days out and shops just less then a 10 minute drive away. Only negative I can think off is no washing machine but had a dishwasher instead which helps out massively when tired from a day out hiking. Will stay here again in the future.

My only suggestion would be to move the TV from the snug and fix it up on the wall above the main light switches and use a Fire Stick and obtain the Chanel’s through Wi Fi that way your in the main living area with the fire etc…. Apart from that a great cottage and a credit to the owners.

Good secure garden for the dogs to wander whilst supervised. Clearer instructions for the wood burner, would be beneficial and a full supply of wood, to last more than one evening, would have been nice. Other than this it was well appointed and I would highly recommend this property to stay in.

“We were absolutely charmed by this quirky and stylish cottage, renovated sympathetically and with a contemporary colour palette - everything that you could need is provided from big, soft towels to enough kitchen implements to cook a roast dinner if you wanted to!”

We loved the snug in the evenings. WiFi genuinely very good and reliable. The location is great with walks from the doorstep or mountains, seaside, coastal paths, lakes, pretty little towns, industrial heritage sites and lush valleys all in easy striking distance. Our top recommendations would be the costal path loop from Cemaes Bay in Anglesey and to visit the beaches at Trefor & Porthdillaen - no regrets at all regarding choosing this area and this cottage in particular. Really happy and it was a wrench to leave this little hideaway.

The only point I’d make was the sofa in the small room for watching tv could do with a extra long cushion back so you can sit comfortably upright as there is no support here for sitting. However the other sofa is much better for sitting in front of the fire. The manual the owners left was great and it was great to have a dishwasher. It was good of the owners to leave some starter logs. The seating outside in two areas was perfect to enjoy the sun. We made friends with the Shetland ponies next door. It was a magical holiday, and we will definitely be back to do more walks in the Y Fron area, thank you.

“We think the online description was over romanticised .”

The photos on line gave the impression of open views.The cottage was a good way off the beaten track and was not easily found,especially given there was a road closure that nullified your directions,admittedly not your fault but anyone without a sat nav would have been in trouble at this point.I think the fact that the stairs are not just steep but half step should also be mentioned,as visits to the bathroom in the night are an adventure to say the least.The cottage was spotlessly clean and could not be faulted in that respect but I do feel that the description and website presentation were not representative of the actual property and having been there I feel somehow it just was not what we had expected it to be and I think it was overpriced.

“Beautiful little cottage in a lovely setting.”

Owners ensured was clean and tidy with little touches such as tea bags and milk. Also a handy cleaning pack with washing up liquid, tea towels etc. Stairs where incredibly steep if you struggle with Mobility be careful and the shower is for those under 5 foot but was at the same time hilarious, Would highly recommend this cottage for your trip will definitely look to stay again. Can’t recommend highly enough!! Thank you to the owner loved it!!

About the location

CAERNARFON

Llanberis 8 miles; Bangor 9 miles.

Caernarfon (county town of Gwynedd) has much historic and cultural importance in North Wales. It is a popular tourist spot with its impressive 13th Century castle, well preserved town walls and delightful water front. During the season there are guided tours of the castle and special events including historic pageants. There is also a station for the Welsh Highland Railway, which passes through dramatic scenery, the village of Beddgelert and onto Porthmadog. Fishing trips are available from the harbour and another attraction within walking distance of the town centre is Segontium, a Roman fort and museum, housing many important finds. Caernarfon offers a wide selection of shops and places to eat and is close to the lovely beaches of the Isle of Anglesey and the Lleyn Peninsula as well as the mountains and rivers of Snowdonia, including the renowned mountaineering town of Llanberis at the foot of Mount Snowdon.
