“Over the last few years we’ve done quite a few of these stays as a family of 10 (2 grandparents, 4 parents and 4 grandkids aged 13 to 7) as a way of spending quality time with each other.”

We all enjoy our stays and the relative remoteness of a property doesn’t necessarily put us off as we tend to go out during the day and make our own entertainment in the evening. We all enjoy our stays and the relative remoteness of a property doesn’t necessarily put us off as we tend to go out during the day and make our own entertainment in the evening. The property, according to all of us, was one of the best that we’ve stayed at. We were there for three nights during February half-term. Notwithstanding the challenges of the narrow approach road from the village on our first day and our encounter with the road sweeper half way up the road then the drive through the fields with the sheep it was worth it to see the barn at the end which looked really impressive . We were all instantly struck with the view from the large parking area at the front on arrival. Plenty of room to park for our 3 cars and probably quite a few more. Inside the property we loved the entrance with ample room for all our coats and boots. Such a good idea especially as we did some walking every day and given the changeable weather we didn’t have to trail our mud around the house nor did we have to change outside especially if it was raining. A hosepipe outside was great for washing off our boots. Once in the house the feeling of spaciousness in the living room with its vaulted ceiling was mirrored in the kitchen/dining/family room. The original staircase in the living room is a real feature. We spent most of our time in the kitchen area as it was so bright and airy and complemented by the view through the bi-fold doors which unfortunately we couldn’t really take full advantage off given the weather. We did incidentally get a few clear and sunny intervals. The views were stunning and the sunlight streaming through the window in the main bedroom was a brilliant way to wake up in the morning. All the bedrooms were very well appointed with comfortable beds and plenty of room to move about. The two upstairs bedrooms both had en-suite bathrooms whilst the large bedroom downstairs also had its own en-suite. The two smaller bedrooms shared a bathroom which was still generously equipped. We all had three nights of very good sleep. The en-suites were brilliant with enough facilities so there were no big queues to use the bathroom in the morning. The kitchen was very well appointed and equipped and we couldn’t think of anything extra that we needed. Preparing our three evening meals was a pleasure. There was plenty of room for everyone to be in the same place whilst not getting in each other’s way. One of the firm favourites especially for the grandkids was the hot tub and even in the evening when it was a bit cooler they were quite happy to go in for half an hour or so. Given the barn’s location the odd excited scream wouldn’t disturb any neighbours. Sitting in the comfortable settees in the living room watching the Olympic Curling finals with a fire in the wood stove and a glass of wine was very enjoyable indeed. We had a great time albeit the isolated location. Walking to the pub in the local village was a possibility but the walk back after a few drink could be a bit ‘challenging’. Mari, the owner was very helpful and made sure we were well catered for and was very quick to respond to our queries. Full marks there. The barn was clean, airy, spacious, very comfortable, very well appointed and in an ideal location for us. We came very well prepared for the variable weather but even so the views were brilliant. We fully enjoyed our stay and our grandkids were very sorry to leave as were the adults. I truly recommend Ysgubor Maen Y Bardd for your stay. It was worth every penny.

About the location

CONWY

Llandudno 5 miles; Betws-y-Coed 16 miles.

Conwy, a World Heritage Site, is without doubt world famous for its historical and architectural heritage, yet at the heart of the town lies a hub of bustling activity. Alongside its ancient festivals and fairs, musical recitals, galleries and historical attractions, there is an array of specialist shops, restaurants and hotels. Built for King Edward I between 1283 and 1287, Master James of St George's design, Conwy Castle remains one of the most outstanding achievements of medieval military architecture. The distinctive, elongated shape, with its two barbicans, eight massive towers and a great bow-shaped hall was perhaps determined by the narrow rocky outcrop on which the castle stands. The town is proud of its historic traditions and celebrates its past by retaining many of these in its annual festivals, events and fairs, including the Honey fair, Seed fair and Gwledd Conwy Feast in October, along with other musical events throughout the year. Conwy is the perfect base for exploring the dramatic Snowdonia National Park, walking unspoilt sandy beaches, or taking in the wonderful scenery on your doorstep. Also within reach are the Llechwedd Slate Caverns, which has the longest zip wire in Europe, and Surf Snowdonia is just six miles away.
