“We loved our stay at Ynys Castell, from the moment we arrived .”

It was fun working around the tides. The house itself was spacious, really comfortable, well-equipped and the views are just incredible. the garden a lovely space for us all with mature shrubs and plants. Yes, we had to observe safety precautions but that was manageable. The only slight inconvenience is that the only bathroom upstairs is ensuite so a bit inconvenient for occupants of the other bedrooms, although they could go downstairs. The views from upstairs windows made up for that....so ...

It was fun working around the tides. The house itself was spacious, really comfortable, well-equipped and the views are just incredible. the garden a lovely space for us all with mature shrubs and plants. “Thought parts of accommodation were looking but tired.”

Some furniture in lounges have seen lots of use. Kitchen area was well appointed and equipped with crockery and equipment. Kitchen tap needs seeing too as very loose. Cracked Payne in kitchen door and radiator cover in upstairs bedroom damaged. Utility room needs some work as paint peeling. Although we enjoyed our time probably would not rebook as found it but restrictive with young children, due to tide times. No fault of anyone just nature.

“Idyllic setting, well equipped kitchen and utility room with huge fridge space.”

Bathrooms modernised and mostly clean apart from mouldy shower curtain. Plenty of communal spaces both inside and out for large groups. Huge dining table with space for whole group. Very little toilet paper and only 2 small dish towels provided. Seems odd when all other equipment was plentiful.

“The location is everything at this holiday home on its own island, surrounded by a gorgeous lush garden and the Menai Straits, with a tidal causeway to top it off.”

It's a comfy and unpretentious house with plenty of nooks and space to get away from others, as well as lots of communal places for eating, playing games, doing jigsaws, reading some of the many books stacked in the bookcases, and simply catching up. The furnishings are functional and feel homely rather than hotel-like; likewise the bathrooms are fine with loads of hot water but not lavishly decorated. Plenty of crockery and cutlery, large size cooking equipment etc; lots of fridge space, an efficient dishwasher, washing machine and dryer. The induction hob and oven with lots of touch buttons made us a work a bit harder but they all functioned. And of course there is the tide to check on at regular intervals with the joy of seeing how high it comes; the soothing noise of water and of birds in the garden and in the Straits. It's such a lovely place to spend time (and we're glad it's available for us to enjoy without having to maintain it)!

“We really enjoyed our stay, the location is beautiful and so is the house and gardens.”

But we were really disappointed to find we could not use the log fire as advertised, the heating and hot water tripped at the rcb breaker a few times, and there were a few minor maintenance things like Cracked or loose toilet seats, curtain rails which were worn out or damaged, and a couple of dirty pants, which we thought were quite limited when we were trying to cook for 12 people. Also, the induction hob was quite unreliable and rather small, and was not ideal for cooking for big groups. at one point, The waste pipe under the sink detached and flooded the kitchen, fortunately we are quite a handy group of people and we managed to clear out all of the rotten food and put it back together! And it drained much better after this. Despite these things, we had a great time and I sincerely hope that the feedback is taken constructively and I hope the place isn’t modernised because we quite liked the retro feel! Perhaps a couple of new induction hob nonstick pans (I bought a new one from the local Waitrose because the frying pans were not great) and sort out the log burner and the issues with the heating, a bit of TLC and we would love to come back! Thanks for having us. Hopefully we will do it again!

“Ynys Castell is all about location location location.”

To watch your access road go underwater, leaving you marooned on the island, is the greatest sense of relaxation. If we’d been stuck indoors all week, I might have listed some faults. Thankfully, the weather was kind to us, so we took full advantage of the outdoors.

It contained everything we needed for a wonderful stay. We had read a couple of bad reviews before we travelled but found everything clean and tidy. Yes there are a few cosmetic jobs that need addressing but nothing that distracted from our use or enjoyment. We didn't realise that the only bathroom upstairs was the ensuite but we managed fine. Amazing grounds very neat and tidy with a host of nooks and seating areas. The outside dining area had a very Mediterranean feel to it. Would love to return.

“We had a very enjoyable stay and found the property ideal for our four related families: we two grandparents and the families of our three children.”

The house has a slightly quirky feel to it and there are plenty of spaces to go when you want to socialise or just be quiet on your own - both indoors and in the grounds. There are lounge areas both upstairs and downstairs. The kitchen is well-equipped and there was plenty of crockery and cutlery for our needs. We actually found that the inaccessibility of the causeway for two hours either side of high tide quite beneficial in that being cut off for a few hours seemed to help bond everyone together. The property does need a bit of TLC, though, and we were surprised at how dusty/dirty some places were, suggesting several months since proper cleaning. There was no arrival pack, a common courtesy with most holiday properties we have rented in the past, and we were surprised to find scant provision of toilet rolls, black rubbish bags, tea towels and dishwasher tablets. There were bright lights situated in the grounds which seemed to be on all night, which is both uneconomical and damaging to wildlife. Although there are three bedrooms upstairs, the only toilet/bathroom upstairs is the en-suite for one of the bedrooms. Despite those criticisms, we would not hesitate to recommend the property for family get-togethers such as ours.

“When we got there the house smelled of wet dog.”

We had to air out the house. The general cleanliness was very poor. Didnt really use the ensuite bath downstairs as the shower curtain was disgusting . All the towels had stains on them . A few of the mattresses of the beds were lumpy and in need of replacment as did quite a few of the pillows. The whole house needed a good dusting. Which we had to do ourselves as we have allergies. Not something you want to do on a holiday. The garden however are beautiful and the owners got back to us straight away with any queries or general issues we had. Just feel whoever is maintaining the cleaning for the property needs to do a much better job. As the property and views itself was amazing.

“The location is amazing and hard to beat.”

The house was disappointing with parts looking tired and in need of refurbishment. The bathroom situation upstairs was unsatisfactory with 2 rooms only having access to the bathroom by going through another bedroom. The upstairs lounge/ under stairs area needs attention to make it more appealing. Outside the barbecue area needs some attention.

“The central heating system and hot water system need to be upgraded.”

When the heating was on the property was warm in some rooms and very cold in other rooms; in particular the downstairs en-suite room had a tepid radiator which did not heat the room. An emergency electric heater would have been welcome when the oil tank ran out during our stay. The blinds in the upstairs en-suite bathroom, downstairs en-suite bathroom and upstairs single room need to be replaced with Venetian blinds which will be easier to keep clean (unlike the mildewed Roman blinds) and easier to operate. The row of coat hooks in the porch fell off when coats were hung on them. These need to be replaced with proper, fit-for purpose coat hooks. Finally, the Sykes website gives mis-information about the property. Concerning the upstairs it currently reads: " 1 double en-suite 1 double with access to Jack and Jill bathroom". This is misleading as the double upstairs has access to the Jack and Jill bathroom and the other double does not. It reads as if there are two bathrooms upstairs. It also says there is a "sitting room with wood burner AND a first floor living/dining room". This would be more accurately described as a 'Reading nook'. Finally it states there are three TVs at the property when there are two. As a future improvement, the downstairs bunk room would be more comfortable if the old fitted wardrobe and drawers/cupboard unit were removed and replaced with smaller storage. This might even make room for a small double bed instead of the bunks beds. We appreciate that the maintenance of such a unique venue is hard and that the owners do their very best to keep on top of it. As a previous reviewer said 'it is the small things that make a difference'.

“Some small touches would go a long way.”

More pots and pans as the number were limited. One poor quality blue cloth and scourer were supplied , spend a little more on these items as those supplied were useless! A few more tea towels , two supplied which were used after one day! All in all a fantastic property but the small touches let it down

Ynys Castell is one of the most unique and exciting holiday houses, on its own island off Anglesey.

The adventure begins the moment you drive onto the causeway! The house has magnificent panoramic views of the Menai Strait, where you might see cormorants perching on some of the rocks, seals and so much more.

With the backdrop of the mountains of Snowdonia in addition to the historic Menai Suspension Bridge, Bangor Pier and The Great Orme, it will be hard to know where to direct your gaze. "Ynys Castell (Castle Island) a unique and exciting holiday experience that starts as soon as you drive onto the causeway!" A lovely holiday house, sleeping 13, and set in mature gardens with lawned areas, vantage seating spots, meandering paths and steps down to the water's edge and its very own slipway. Ideal for families and large groups this is a comfortable house with space generously provided so that everyone can be together or find a quiet space to be alone.

Great if you're looking for a unique house to celebrate that upcoming special occasion.

You may be on an island, but when the tide is right you can walk into Menai Bridge within minutes to sample the delights of independent little shops and excellent restaurants.

About the location

MENAI BRIDGE

Llanfairpwllgwyngyll 2 miles; Bangor 2.5 miles; Beaumaris 4.5 miles; Caernarfon 8 miles.

This delightful town sits right on the edge of the Isle of Anglesey and is home to one of two bridges to mainland Wales. It is an ideal base for a holiday and is great for exploring this beautiful island. It has a strong history which can be discovered in the Menai Bridge Heritage Museum, the well known Saint Tysilio lived on Church Island, just off of Anglesey in the 7th century, hence the name of the 15th century St. Tysilio's Church. Menai Bridge itself offers a good range of shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. In terms of entertainment, this is an ideal spot with something for everybody, there is the butterfly palace 'Pili Palas' which is incredibly popular with families, as well as the astounding Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens well worth a walk around. The Snowdonia National Park is within driving distance for you outdoor enthusiasts, it has wonderful walking, cycling and opportunities to see some beautiful sights. Nearer to the town, there are some incredible places including the popular towns of Beaumaris and Caernarfon with their majestic castles and much more to do.
