“This was our first stay at Gwelfor, and our first visit to Wales for many years.”

We chose Gwelfor because of the location, as we wanted to visit Portmerion, Harlech Castle and book a trip on the Ffestiniog steam train, to celebrate a big birthday! The owner Calvin contacted us by phone a few days before our arrival date and he was so helpful with ideas of things to do, and he sent us a link with restaurant recommendations. Gwelfor was very easy to find, and the house was immaculate and spotlessly clean when we arrived. The milk, tea and delicious Welsh cakes were a lovely thought. Having 2 lounges was a first for us, and having a freezer, dishwasher and washing machine and tumble dryer was great. We would recommend shopping at Lidl in Porthmadog. The highlight for us was having a gorgeous beach, Samson Bay, to walk to, only 15 minutes walk from Gwelfor. The views from this small beach are so scenic, and the Wales coastal walk takes you to Black Rock Sands one way and Borth y Gest, up some steep steps, the other way. The one disappointment was not being able to sit outside in the courtyard and enjoy the garden and countryside, as we had showers each day, and it was very windy. Thanks very much Calvin

“We enjoyed our stay at Gwelfor.”

The property is very spacious and overlooks the golf course. It was very peaceful and just a 10 minute walk to a lovely sandy beach and the Wales Coastal Path. Everything we needed was included at the property and it was nice to be provided with a welcome pack of tea, milk and Welsh cakes. It was also nice to have use of a dishwasher and washing machine (dishwasher tablets were also included). We would have no hesitation in staying here again.

“Gwelfor was one of the best cottages we have stayed in, especially as we were there for a golfing event .”

The cottage is right next to the first tee and 18th green. We were also blessed with fantastic weather for most of the week. There are many walks direct from the door, and places like Barmouth and Abersoch only a half hours drive. Communication with the owner, Calvin was excellent. He contacted us after our arrival to ensure that everything was alright with the cottage. We wouldn't hesitate to stay at Gwelfor again and will definitely be back.

“This was our second visit to Gwelfor and we were delighted with all the house and gardens had to offer .”

Having two lounge area was ideal for our family group of 8 people as a nice quiet space especially in the evenings was welcome. All bedrooms are a nice size and 2 bathrooms plus a downstairs toilet was great . The garden provides so much room to play and we all loved it. There is so much for families to do in and around Porthmadog. Owners are kind and helpful nothing was too much trouble and communication was great. We will be back in the future .

“We were a group of friends with ages between 12 and 84.”

The cottage certainly met our needs. It was very well equipped with ample space for all. Great to wander to the nearest beaches for walks. We especially liked Sampson’s Bay. Near to lots of activities. The youngsters especially enjoyed the forest coaster and go karting. The more senior of the group loved Portmeirion. Would definitely recommend this property and the area. “Gwelfor is a large holiday cottage which sleeps and can accomodate 8 persons.”

Unfortunately my husband and me were only 2 as our friends had to pull out at the last minute. I did find the house too large for us two but nevertheless we were comfortable and had a great time. Thank you to the owner for the welcome pack, tea/coffee, milk and Welsh cakes. Watching the golfers was also entertaining.

“I would definitely recommend Gwelfor.”

It met all my expectations. Situated in a perfect location with easy access to the beaches and woodland walks. 10 minutes walk to the local shop and fish and chip shop ( also recommended ! ). It is peaceful, cosy and welcoming, and everything you could need is provided. Communication with the owner was very good. The area itself is stunning- sandy beaches, and beautiful woodlands and mountains. There is plenty to do- would recommend the Llama trek which is just a few minutes away- and there are plenty of lovely restaurants and cafes in the area. It was the perfect base for our holiday and we would all happily come back again. Highly recommended

“We loved our stay.”

Perfect for a 3 generation family - space to be together but also space for 5 mins quiet in the very comfy chairs and sofas. The children (big and small) enjoyed watching the golfers from the windows. They also really enjoyed the toy/ book box (thank you). We have to say that the kitchen was the best equipped we have ever experienced - and we have experienced a few! There is everything you could need and more besides and we never ran out of crockery or cutlery. Fabulous location with easy access to a beautiful, safe cove or walking routes. Calvin (the owner) talked us through everything before arrival which was refreshing, helpful and appreciated. He was very responsive during our stay to a minor technical hitch, which was sorted quickly. Great stay despite the somewhat dodgy weather :-)

“What a wonderful holiday we had with our grandchildren .”

The house was everything we could have wished for , spotlessly clean nice bedding and comfy beds and very well equipped kitchen , we were short of nothing . The outside space was perfect for family lots of space to eat and play . The boys spend the majority of the week outside and we had all our meals outside as the weather was beautiful. The area around the house was great for us as two of our family love a game of golf and the rest of us love the beach and swimming in the sea. We will be returning and will be recommending to all our friends .

What a great location easy walking distance to a beautiful beach and delightful views. Lots to do in the area need to return to do so more. The house was well equipped and suited all of us children and adults. Nice neighbours. Great patio area for BBQ evenings. “We had an excellent holiday based at Gwelfor.”

It's a lovely house with very comfortable sofas and beds. The bedding and towels were best quality and beautifully clean and fresh. The kitchen is well stocked and the bathrooms have good efficient showers. Gwelfor was also an excellent base for exploring the beaches within walking distance and plenty of beautiful places to visit by car. We would love to come back here again. The owners were very helpful and recommended lots of outings to chose from. I would just mention that for anyone with mobility problems you need to be aware that the stairs are rather steep.

“After a shaky start we had a lovely week.”

It's a great house and would be fantastic in summer with its big garden and short walk to the beautiful beach, which was still nice in the winter. I had best mention the bad points though. We had to contact the owner by phone to ask how to turn on the heating. He has to do it remotely, so if the thermostat won't go above 7 degrees that's what you have to do and hope he's not away on business like he was when we tried to contact him about the key. The upstairs of the property never really got warm even by the end of our stay. The kitchen was clean on the surface, but inside the cupboards and drawers needed a good clean before we could use them and the inside of the freezer was mouldy; it must have been turned off at some point over the winter and I think someone must have burst a bottle of wine in it because it looks like there is frozen wine in the bottom. The grill pan was dirty and had a old food on it from a previous occupant. We couldn't work the grill (that could be my fault) but there were plenty of frying pan alternatives. Finally, the built in fridge doesn't get cold enough for food so the welcome milk soon had to be thrown out. It looks like other people have had this problem because the worn thermostat control looks like there have been plenty of attempts to make it colder. There is another fridge though, so use that one for food and the other for making drinks slightly chilled. Other than that the kitchen was very well equipped and we really did have a good time!

These are all very valid comments and highlight the fact that some of the standards fall below what i would expect our guests to experience when they come to visit.This was the first booking we had since the New Year and i had forgotten to maximise the heating before the guests arrived so that was down to me not planning ahead. The fridges are now being replaced and all grill pans removed and replaced with New. Both the cleaners and the owners will address the shortcomings on cleaning and all radiators in the house re-balanced to maximise the heating. The spacious house overlooking the golf course was even better than the pictures indicated with a large garden and patio area and everything we could possibly need inside the house. It was well located for the coast and Snowdonia and a 5 minute walk to either the lovely, secluded beach through the dunes and golf course or along the road to the village shop and fish and chip shop, with Porthmadog nearby for Tesco, Lidl and Aldi.

All ages felt the cottage was very suitable and well equipped. The younger members of the party were particularly impressed by the good wifi and Sky Sports. There were lots of little touches that were appreciated e.g. 2 fridges, plenty of cutlery, 2 TVs. The closeness to Samson Bay was a real plus.

Our party was a mix of 2 families, but there was ample space and we loved the garden. The owner was quick to solve a slight problem we had with a wasp nest! And was available immediately. The neighbours were also friendly and helpful. We loved that the house was neat and tidy, large, and not too "modern". Gwelfor is a great place to stay, the area is beautiful. The short walk to the sandy beach is pleasant and the views are spectacular. We are considering booking for next year.

A clean, well equipped property, only really missing a hairdryer, but with little touches such as foil, cling film, kitchen roll and soap by every sink a very welcoming home for a week. Only downsides from our point of view are the wifi was very unpredictable, a bit of a let down for the teenagers, and there was nowhere to recycle on site.

“This house was well situated near Black Rock Sands, Portmadog, giving good access to the Llyn peninsula and Snowdonia.”

It was very quiet and excellent facilities for our enlarged family who were meeting for our Ruby Wedding celebration. We enjoyed good weather and had 2 outside Barbecues which were fun and comfortable with the outside furniture. Having flown from various places we were unable to bring much so a few more basic food commodities and perhaps picnic items would have been really helpful. However I would recommend this house as a base for a great family holiday.

“The heating system was a bit if a problem.”

We think it may have had an airlock because sometimes the radiators would come on and sometimes only the odd one. The last evening was colder than our other nights but we had no heating or hot water. There are signs everywhere asking you not to touch the system so we didn't. We left a note to this effect when we left. The smaller double bedroom could have done with a chest of draws to put away smaller items as we had to leave those in the suitcase which meant delving through everything each time. There was nowhere else to put them. Only one bedroom had a wardrobe, the others had open hanging rails. Could have done with towel rails in the shower room instead of one very small heated rail. Overall a great place for a holiday in a lovely quiet location and we enjoyed our staying the cottage. Apart from the above it was superbly appointed and clean. So much to see and do as well for all the family.

“Wonderful location.”

Love Samson's Bay, near enough to walk to even with small children. Cottage lovely, but some cobwebs left in bedrooms and bathrooms, and a smell of damp in a couple of rooms and kitchen cupboards. Good cooker, washing machine and tumble drier - very useful. Nice to have Sky package and Wifi. Good showers and plenty of hot water. Lovely garden and ample parking space. Good communication with the owner, very helpful regarding activities in the area. I would have appreciated some basics provided on arrival as an immediate trip to the supermarket was essential after a long journey with little ones. We were mostly lucky with the weather and had a fantastic week. We would definitely consider returning to this property.

“An ideal location for touring North Wales and yet within a few minutes walk of a small secluded beach.”

The splendid beach at Black Rock Sands is a few minutes in the car but it is worth driving because you can take the car onto the beach. The rest of North Wales is within easy reach with Snowdon being about a 45 to 60 minute drive. Porthmadog is two miles away with a Tesco supermarket although there is a good sized Spar shop and Post Office in Morfa Bychan itself. Porthmadog is the starting point for the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways which share the new platform at Harbour Station. Both of these lines are well worth a ride and are highly recommended. We all agreed that we would have no hesitation in booking Gwelfor again.

Just 2 miles away, set on the picturesque Glaslyn Estuary, is the bustling harbour town of Porthmadog, boasting an array of individual shops and restaurants, whilst being home to the Ffestiniog Railway and Welsh Highland Railway, where you can travel by steam train through the spectacular Snowdonia scenery. The village of Tremadog is close by with its pubs and restaurant, plus the pretty village of Borth-y-Gest, with its cliffs and coves, is within a short drive, while the celebrated and unique Italianate village of Portmeirion is within easy touring distance. Discover the majestic castles at nearby Criccieth, Harlech and Caernarfon, explore the slate caverns at Llechwedd, or try a day of sea, course, or game fishing in the area.
