“I have never before left a negative review for a holiday cottage but this place was so awful it ruined our holiday and I feel obliged to do so.”

On arrival the house was bitterly cold, the heating is ancient storage heaters and they are simply not up to the job. The newer heater in the kitchen did not kick out any heat until Wednesday despite making a lot of noise. On arrival the house was bitterly cold, the heating is ancient storage heaters and they are simply not up to the job. The newer heater in the kitchen did not kick out any heat until Wednesday despite making a lot of noise. We live in a 400 year old cottage on Dartmoor, we are used to the cold but this was another level. The house is filthy behind doors, corners and under furniture covered in dust, dirt, hairs and spider crap. Cobwebs everywhere and piles of plaster that had fallen from the walls. My dogs found some mouldy food behind the sofa which made them really ill. We were up everynight letting them out for the toilet. They were ill for our whole stay. The shower in the first bathroom was so disgustingly dirty we did not use it at all, there was mould in the second bathroom. Both my husband and I have breathing issues that were seriously affected by the dust and mould. A week later we are still not well. We raised a complaint on Monday with Sykes and the owners asking for it to be cleaned but nothing was done, the owners answer being that the house was checked and considered clean. This house is not clean by anybodys standards. We cleaned the house ourselves. Although what it needs is a massive deep clean and I wasnt prepared to do that. Mopping the kitchen floor I had to change the water in the bucket 8 times that floor has not been cleaned in months. The bedding was old and grubby. The pillows lumpy and stained. I washed the towels before I used them. The curtains are covered in dust and dirt, the windows were filthy. The sofas are old, tired and uncomfortable. Appliances, showers etc old, broken and requiring upgrading This is not charming shabby chic, its neglect. This house is not a winter let, its not fit to be let as a holiday cottage, its filthy, not maintained and in a shocking state. There was rubbish everywhere, broken bits of equipment just left around. Sheets of plasterboard behind the sofa covered in old cobwebs. I could go on and on. Its such a shame its a gorgeous cottage in a lovely location. I would not recomend renting it and Im shocked by some of the positive reviews, did they stay in a different house?. The kitchen was well equiped, with a bit of TLC this would be a lovely place to stay.

Thank you for your comments. As I said when I responded to your concerns at the beginning of your stay, I'm surprised and dismayed by what you say. Frankly mystified. I employ a reputable local company of cleaners who have been very reliable. A member of my family who shares my high standards had also recently checked the cottage over. As I also mentioned because of the cottage's isolated location a gas supply is not available, so electricity all that is available. Electric storage heaters are much more expensive, and less effective and flexible. As a result I am considering closing the cottage for the early months of the year 2027. However some of my longterm faithful visitors will be sadly disappointed. I'm sorry you didnt enjoy your stay. Best wishes Property Owner
