You’ve just got the keys to your perfect holiday home! (How exciting!) Let’s start by naming your holiday cottage…

Naming your cottage isn’t easy! As an owner, you want your property to stand out from your competitors.

However, you want to make the name memorable, not too complicated and simple to spell.

Embracing the Welsh Culture & Language

The Welsh language is something that us Welsh folk keep close to our hearts. We are proud of our country and its language and are striving to keep the language alive.

The local Welsh councils are keen to keep the language alive and want owners to consider Welsh names when naming their cottage.

Do Welsh Names Have a Meaning?

Yes! To a non-Welsh speaker, the town names can look quite jumbled. However, believe it or not, Welsh town or city names are often based on their surroundings meaning that sometimes you can guess the location or type of place just by the first word! Have a look at some of the examples below:

  • ABER,-  Means the mouth of the river – i.e Aber Falls – is a Waterfall
  • CAPEL – Means Chapel
  • CASTELL – Is a castle
  • FFORDD – Means Road

When naming your cottage, consider the location or style of your cottage, is it on a hill, near a beach or is it in the mountains? Is your cottage small or is it a converted barn? By using the location or style of your cottage, This can start the foundation of your cottage name.

Here are some examples to get you started:

  • Bryn- Hill
  • Bwthyn – Cottage
  • Ty Gwyn – White House
  • Ysgubor – Barn

Does Your Cottage Have Any History?

Spelling

You don’t want to overcomplicate the name of your cottage, imagine trying to type ‘llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch Cottage’ into your SatNav, impossible!

Keep it simple and precise, you can also give your cottage a nickname i.e Llanfair cottage to make it a bit easier!
