“What a find!”
5 Thomas Street is a quirky yet cosy cottage that exceeded all my expectations. It’s beautifully presented – stylish, warm, and full of character – while still being incredibly practical. The living room feels instantly welcoming after a long day out, with a comfy sofa and a lovely homely atmosphere. The décor is tasteful without being overdone, and there are thoughtful little touches everywhere that make you feel right at home.
Upstairs, the double bedroom is spacious and comfortable with plenty of storage, and the second bedroom with bunk beds is ideal whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or with family. I was especially impressed with how well thought-out the space is – there’s no shortage of room for clothes or bags.
The kitchen is outstanding: spotlessly clean, modern, and equipped with absolutely everything you could need, from quality cookware to the little extras you don’t usually expect in a holiday let. Whether you just want to make a quick breakfast or cook a proper meal, you’ll find everything to hand. The bathroom is also fresh, modern, and fitted out to a high standard – plenty of hot water and fluffy towels included! The cottage manages that perfect balance between being a cosy retreat and a practical base. It’s the kind of place where you can curl up with a book on a rainy day just as happily as you can come back to after a full day of hiking or exploring.
The owners are lovely – friendly, helpful, and clearly take pride in making sure guests have a great stay. Even the recycling (which can be confusing from place to place!) is well organised with clear guidance. Parking was no trouble at all, with plenty of space right outside on the road.
Llanberis itself has everything you could possibly need within a short walk: Spar and Subway for essentials, plenty of restaurants and cafés, outdoor shops for kit, and a few friendly pubs and bars (including a sports bar). There’s a beautiful walk along Llyn Padarn that takes you to the country park, and Dolbadarn Castle – free to explore – is only a short stroll away. The views of the surrounding mountains are simply stunning.
From the cottage you can set off directly on the Llanberis Path up Snowdon, the easiest and most straightforward route to the summit. Alternatively, the Sherpa bus stops nearby and takes you to Pen y Pass for more challenging trails. The Snowdon Mountain Railway station is just a 5-minute walk away if you’d rather ride to the top – but be sure to book in advance as it sells out quickly.
History lovers shouldn’t miss Dinorwic Slate Quarry, tucked under Elidir Fawr – a fascinating glimpse into the area’s industrial past and a must-see for me personally. For gentler days, Caernarfon is just a short drive with its magnificent castle and harbour, while Porthmadog is about 50 minutes away via the scenic A4086. And then there’s Portmeirion – like stepping into another world entirely, colourful, surreal, and with a real wow factor that makes it well worth the trip.
I first visited Llanberis a couple of years ago on my way home, and I knew I had to come back. This cottage made the return even more special, and I’m already planning another stay, perhaps in a different season to see the mountains and lakes in a new light. In short, the cottage is gorgeous, perfectly located, and a real home-from-home. To borrow Arnie’s words: I’ll be back!
