Rhyd Y Bont Bach is a great place to stay.

We had a lovely family holiday. It is very well located if you like walking and going to beaches. It is very private and has a nice garden. The surroundings are amazing. The rooms are very comfy and the landlord has everything you may need for a short holiday.

Disappointing standard for a £1,500-a-week cottage We booked Rhyd Y Bont Bach through Sykes Cottages for a week at a cost of around £1,500.

Unfortunately, the property fell substantially short of the standard we would reasonably expect at this price. The biggest issue was that this wasn't one or two minor problems. There were repeated issues with cleanliness, maintenance, plumbing, furniture, facilities and the general condition throughout the property. While the beds and bedding appeared to be in good repair and clean, much of the rest of the cottage felt tired, poorly maintained and in need of attention. Water and plumbing The water arrangements were particularly concerning. The property's water supply appeared to be connected to a tank that also supplied a cattle trough. Information in the guidebook advised guests to use a separate kitchen tap for drinking water, but we felt there was insufficient signage explaining this within the property. Unfortunately, that separate tap was badly plumbed, with significant black mould or organic growth around the surrounding kitchen surfaces. Similar problems with mould and staining were present around the sinks, radiators, showers and baths elsewhere in the property. The upstairs plumbing was also extremely poor. The cold tap did not work, while the hot tap became scalding within seconds. The water itself also had an unpleasant smell, making something as basic as washing your face an unpleasant experience. Condition and cleanliness There were numerous examples of poor maintenance: broken furniture handles, faulty switches, dead bulbs, missing lampshades and areas of bare plaster. Wardrobes were unpleasant-smelling and filled with miscellaneous stored items. The kitchen was particularly disappointing for a property advertised as sleeping six people. Almost every cupboard was occupied by old pots, pans and other items, leaving virtually no usable storage for guests' food or belongings. We ended up storing food on the floor and effectively had to close off one of the downstairs bathroom doors to create some additional usable space. There wasn't even a properly usable sharp kitchen knife, which made preparing food unnecessarily difficult. The child safety arrangements also need attention. The child gate is only provided upstairs rather than at the bottom of the stairs, and the gate itself was broken. Living space The lounge has no conventional lamps or softer lighting, only ceiling lights in a large vaulted space. Combined with the lack of soft furnishings, this made the room feel dark, echoey and quite uncomfortable. Conversation and listening to the television were genuinely difficult, particularly for anyone who has difficulty hearing. The farm setting The property is located on an active cattle farm. We accept that this may partly be down to our expectations and that anyone booking a working farm should anticipate some of the realities of farm life. However, the experience here was not particularly family or pet friendly. The surrounding fields were heavily affected by livestock manure, and moving around outside involved considerable care to avoid stepping in it. There were also cattle in the immediate surrounding environment, which made us uncomfortable using some of the surrounding areas. We have stayed at farm properties before and understand that this comes with the territory. What was disappointing here was the apparent lack of consideration for guests, particularly families with children and pets, within that environment. It is reasonable to expect a certain distinction between the two areas or, alternatively, clearer information in the listing about what to expect. Garden and outdoor furniture The secluded garden itself is actually one of the property's better features. It is peaceful and pleasantly private. Unfortunately, the advertised outdoor furniture was not present. Instead, there was a picnic bench with what appeared to be a significant build-up of dirt and mud across its surface. The BBQ was also left dirty and heavily encrusted with residue. We did not feel comfortable using it. The BBQ is also poorly positioned for preparing an outdoor meal for six people, being located immediately next to the table and on a slope. More seriously, another garden bench was rotten and collapsed completely. On inspection, it appeared that a previous break had been temporarily taped together. Leaving furniture in that condition in a holiday property is both disappointing and potentially dangerous. Internet The listing warned that the broadband could be slow. Unfortunately, this was more than simply slow broadband. During our stay, it operated at around 0.5-3 Mbps download for perhaps one or two days at most and was otherwise effectively unusable. We spent considerable time troubleshooting the connection, including investigating the router configuration, without resolving the issue. We appreciate that rural broadband can be challenging. However, if reliable broadband cannot be provided at a property at this price point, we think this should be made much clearer in the listing. Accuracy of the listing There is also some ambiguity in the description of the bathroom arrangements. The downstairs bathroom has two entrances and does not appear to be a dedicated ensuite, despite the way the layout can be interpreted from the listing. This is a relatively minor issue compared with the others, but clearer wording would have helped us understand the property before booking. Overall Some of these issues individually might be understandable in an older rural cottage. The problem is the sheer number of them and the cumulative effect they had on the stay. For £1,500 for a week, we expected a clean, comfortable and properly maintained holiday property. Instead, we encountered significant issues with cleanliness, mould, plumbing, kitchen facilities, maintenance, outdoor furniture and internet access. We spent several hours cleaning, rearranging lights and furniture, and checking cables instead of enjoying our holiday. We appreciate that many of these issues ultimately relate to the property itself rather than Sykes Cottages directly. However, Sykes is the company through which we booked the property, and we would expect the condition and accuracy of properties offered through the platform to be subject to an appropriate level of quality control. We have photographs documenting many of the issues described above. In its current condition, we would not recommend Rhyd Y Bont Bach at anything close to the price we paid.

We have stayed at this lovely cottage several times now, and it never disappoints.

The peaceful countryside setting is perfect, with nothing but cows and sheep as your neighbours, making it a wonderful place to relax. The secure garden is ideal for our dog, who loves having the freedom to explore safely. We were lucky enough to have fantastic weather during our stay and enjoyed eating outside every day. The cottage is very spacious, well-equipped, and only a short drive from beautiful beaches and a lovely local pub. One of my favourite features is the stunning sitting room with its high ceiling, which makes it feel so welcoming and airy. The cottage was clean and comfortable throughout. Although it would benefit from a bit of a deep clean in places, it certainly didn’t detract from our enjoyment of the holiday. We had another wonderful stay and would definitely love to return again next year. Thank you for another relaxing holiday!
