We had a great stay at Hen Ysgubor cottage, the accommodation was spacious and clean with beautiful views over Bala, the hosts were lovely and live next door if you need them, hopefully return in the future.

Had a lovely week at this property.

Spacious, comfortable, had everything we needed. Beautiful views across Bala, lovely garden. The owner left us a bottle of wine in the fridge, tea, coffee, milk and lots of biscuits! The only criticism was the upstairs toilet wouldn't flush properly but the owners said they would look at this. Would definitely recommend this place, great value for money.

The accommodation was perfect for a four night break.

It was central to visiting Harlech, Barmouth, Betws-y-coed. The owners had considered all the details in the property very carefully. The kitchen was well equipped with wonderful views. The living room was well set out. The wet room is downstairs with the rest of the living space upstairs, which was not ideal, (that is a personal preference) as it was the only bathroom - there is a toilet upstairs. The location is just up a steep hill from Bala which is easily accessible by foot.

The owner was welcoming, the cottage was very clean and comfortable and well equipped.

However, the short access track from the road was very rough and bumpy. The stairs were deep steps, which I (at 77 years of age) found quite hard work, and our small(ish) dog could not manage at all. We had to carry her up and down stairs each time, and there was a handrail on only one side of the stairs. Also, my son and I both banged our heads on the beams! All in all, it was a lovely cottage in a beautiful area of Wales.

Beautiful accommodation with everything you could possibly need.

Everything is included which is a lovely touch. Kitchen is great has everything. Living room l/dining room very comfortable and cosy. Great selection of games available. Great upstairs toilet and wet room/toilet down stairs too. Bedrooms are small and the beams are very low we banged our heads a few times and we are only small. Bala is a short walk away but return is up a steep hill. We walked the lake and the river both beautiful walks and gorgeous surrounding areas with plenty of walks and local shops in Bala. Would definitely stay again and recommend to anyone. Alwenna greated us on arrival and was helpful during our stay when the hairdryer blew up she literally gave us hers.

This place looks great in the photos but the photos don’t do it justice.

The accommodation is much larger than it appears, very well maintained and very clean. Everything is supplied and working and will easily accommodate 5 people with its two double bedrooms and a single. The location is remote enough to feel you’re miles from anywhere whilst only a 2 minute drive from the local high street. Views are fantastic and Bala lake is just a stones throw away as are many local amenities. The owners are just around the corner and very, very welcoming and friendly. They’ve mastered the art of providing this lovely converted barn with its homely comforts. We will definitely return and stay there again and recommend it to anyone looking for a cosy, peaceful break in a lovely picturesque rural location for much needed R&R. Top marks for this one!

Lovely accommodation, with everything we needed.

Very comfortable and cosy, especially when the weather was cold and wet outside. A great host who greeted us and showed us around, great added touches including coffee machine, tea and biscuits and milk and a bottle of wine on arrival. Overall a great relaxing stay.

It was so peaceful and in a lovely area too. Would recommend (unless you have mobility issues) as stairs and hills etc. Fully equipped kitchen and lovely walk in shower. Hosts were really helpful too .

On arrival the owner came out and explained the everything to us.

The property itself is lovely, very well presented, very clean and has everything you can possibly think of. The kitchen is very well equipped. We particularly enjoyed the board games. In a great location, just a short walk down to Bala. We had a lovely, relaxing stay and honestly couldn’t recommend it enough.

Just returned from a 3 night stay.

We absolutely loved it! 4 adults, 1 toddler and a dog. The cottage was absolutely beautiful, definitely the cosiest place we have stayed in. It really felt like a home away from home. Really spacious, comfy beds, super clean and has everything you need! Really close to the town of Bala and we enjoyed some lovely walks. The hosts were two of the loveliest people I’ve met, so welcoming and made us feel at home. Had a really relaxing stay, hoping to be back soon!

My husband Me and out dog Mia spent Christmas week 2025, in this Lovely Barn.

It was soooo!!!! Cozy and comfortable. Alweena the owner had decorated the barn with a Christmas tree, lights and decorations, even Christmas bedding. Lovely touches to make it special. Everything you need in the kitchen, especially to cook a Christmas dinner. Very quiet location and nice walks.

really enjoyed are stay .the only thing that I thought would of been a benefit would be a outdoor light .but apart from that could not fault anything.

Alwenna was such a lovely and thoughtful host, and we were really grateful for her flexibility when we had to re-book after I caught covid earlier in the year.

The cottage was cosy, beautifully decorated, and full of little touches that made it feel like home — from board games to every cooking utensil you could possibly need. The setting was peaceful and picturesque, the perfect place to properly switch off. We left feeling rested and very well looked after — diolch yn fawr iawn, Alwenna, am bopeth.

Cottage is as advertised.

Facilities within the cottage are good, clean and well maintained for the most part. Low ceilings in some places which you need to be wary of. Reviews are very much based on personal preferences and opinions and the biggest issue for us was the owners dogs being left out early and barking early morning, sometimes at 7am. Also when owners leave home for whatever reasons dogs are incessantly barking. This did disturb us and put a damper on our stay at this cottage however some may be heavier sleepers and this would not be a problem!

The property was really nice with a good sized well equipped kitchen.

The lounge was well laid out and the views were stunning over Bala as well as Bala lake being visible. The welcome pack was a lovely touch and to actually have a coffee machine was perfect for me as the rest of the party liked tea. We had a fantastic time and on the last day the weather allowed us to sit outside in the family small folly with tea and cakes. This finished the holiday off brilliantly. We would all highly recommend this property to anyone. Thank you to the owners and Sykes for a great relaxing holiday.

We loved the cottage.

It was beautifully clean and the decor was gorgeous. We went with our 2 boys ( 20 & 18 - both at over 6 foot....) and they loved it,,,,they both said the beds were super comfy ! We went to celebrate my son's 18th birthday and we had such a memorable few days. The kitchen and utensils were fabulous. I love to cook when I am away and thoroughly enjoyed using the kitchen. The boys loved the biscuits that were kindly left by the hosts.,,,along with all the other goodies. The views from the cottage , especially the kitchen were stunning. Perfect location for Snowdon, Barmouth, cader Idris and Best y coed. Bala lake was a 5 minute walk from the cottage - amazing ! We were so lucky with the weather and walked to the summit of snowdon ! The hosts were wonderful - super friendly and helpful. It was a joy to stay there and we hope to return soon.

We had a really lovely stay in the cottage.

Plenty of room for 4 adults, a baby and a dog. The living spaces are all upstairs, but they provided us with a baby gate for the stairs and there is a shower downstairs, however they left us a little baby bath as well which was very thoughtful! The owners live next door and were very friendly, showed us around the cottage and then just left us to it. Perfect for families and dogs and would happily come back here again!

Everything we needed was provided by the friendly host Alwenna. The property is ideally located in a quiet spot but within minutes of Bala. Faultless!

Excellent property in a great location for walking the dog and seeing the local area.

Owners there if needed but left us to carry on with our holiday once we had met them and walked around the property to show where everything was.

I felt very comfortable, the accommodation was ideally situated for the town and the lake .

I liked the idea of the wet room , Dogs being allowed was a bonus. The owner were very friendly, a few rules, but all were easy to adhere too.

We have just returned from a lovely week in Bala.

The holiday cottage was great, the owner was there to meet us and show us around the property. There was a beautiful garden and the cottage itself was really spacious with everything you could need and some thoughtful touches. We really enjoyed the location and the beautiful scenery of Wales. We had our dog with us and it was the perfect place to make the most of dog walks, but also open water swimming and paddle boarding on Bala Lake, some runs round part of the lake, a round of golf at a beautiful if not challenging course a few minutes from the cottage, horse riding on the beach and visits to some lovely places. In the evenings the cottage was the perfect place to relax and there were numerous games to play. A thoroughly enjoyable week.

We enjoyed a wonderful stay in Bala.

The house is perfectly placed up a steep hill with amazing views. It´s a great base to explore the area. The house itself has lots of nice touches, the amount of family board games was exceptional and we made great use of them. The bedrooms are basic and the low ceilings in some and the bathroom may be difficult for very tall people! But it all adds to the charm of the place. Having our dog with us was super important to us, the outside space is very well maintained and we spent most evenings enjoying the sun in the garden. The Guest book is very detailed with ideas for places to visit as a family with 2 teenagers we explored the following Bala Lake just a few mins walk away has lots of watersports on offer paddle boarding kayaking etc. 15 mins drive to the Whitewater rafting centre ‘ would highly recommend this place! Then about an hour away to Penryhn Quarry to one of the ZipWorld sites again, outstanding for activities for the family. On top of that, Bala itself has some lovely things to offer. Restaurants including the top rated on trip advisor “Old Wives Tale” which is a quaint Portuguese restaurant where the chef is the waiter and host and it feels like you are dining in his house . Amazing. Towns of Betws Y Coed is worth a visit and also has another smaller zip world experience.

Bedding, towels, toiletries, fully equipped kitchen; it truly felt like walking into a home rather than a rented space. Owner was lovely, welcoming and friendly (with two adorable dogs) and helped us to feel right at home. Views from the cottage are spectacular, overlooking Bala itself and the lake. Plenty of shops and amenities within a short walk so if you plan on an extended stay it is easy to keep the fridge/freezer stocked. 10/10 would recommend to anybody looking for a quiet, cosy retreat away in Wales and will hopefully be able to return again ourselves for another stay in the future.

Absolutely stunning.

Really well equipped and some lovely, thoughtful additions for the festive period such as the extra fridge and freezer. The cottage was also beautifully decorated for Christmas. The welcome hamper was also such a lovely touch. It is only a short walk from town but a bit of a steep climb home. Alwenna was there with a lovely friendly greeting to talk us through the details such as heating / parking etc.

We found the place great.

All things we needed and more. My only thing I would like to mention is it would be great if there was a light strip or something on that small step from living area onto hall to bedrooms. (Similar to the small light on step into bedroom). Otherwise it was brilliant. Cosy, comfortable and an ideal place to stay. Lovely owners. Only had small chats, but very pleasant and welcoming. Well thought out had all that we needed. Owners welcoming and helpful. The property was within walking distance of Bala.Quiet peaceful and lovely views. Easy to access various places ie Harlech ,Caernarfon Beddgelert just as a starter.

A comfortable and welcoming 'home from home' after a day walking the mountains. The only suggestion we would make is a safety handle in the wet room. The little garden with decking overlooking the lake is lovely.

Superb cottage , cosy , super comfortable beds , hot shower, everything we needed was provided for our stay , lovely bottle wine and some milk on our arrival , wonderful owner who is only next door if needed, 3rd time visiting Bala, we explored more of the town from the location of the cottage, gorgeous walks , either side of the lake and reservoir , lots of nooks and crannies, I would recommend to anyone, you can either just chill , walk or explore, we’d love to return again

What a fantastic cottage!

We arrived in the dark to a very warm welcome by the owners. When we woke up the next day we were astounded by the beautiful views straight out the window! The location is perfect, an easy walk down the hill to Bala and then snowdoniavand the coast on your doorstep. We lived it!

This is a beautiful cottage, an absolute home from home.

We all felt so comfortable here and I slept so well in the peace and quiet. It is perfectly situated, close enough to shops etc but far enough away to be peaceful. The owners have thought of everything to make a comfortable stay and little touches like milk in the fridge and biscuits are so thoughtful. A lot of people use the cottage as a base to visit places. We didn't travel far as we just wanted a relaxing, quiet break and the cottage was also the perfect place for just sitting and reading, looking at the views and just wandering about! Our little dog also loved her holiday and was made to feel very welcome.

Lovely welcome pack with Welsh goodies. Great wet room with loads of space. A very quiet area but a good base to see the rest of Wales and plenty of walks for us and the dog. The only thing to improve for us was the outside space. Mostly to accommodate child and dog. No where to let the dog off and play football or games.

What a lovely, cosy, homely property this is, with the friendliest owners.

Extremely well equipped (tea, coffee, sugar etc were provided and there was even a slow cooker in the kitchen cupboard) and everything thought of to make the stay enjoyable. Our doggie loved it and with it being a 10 minute walk from town, it’s ideally situated (though you might want to drive in if you don’t like walking up hills). We will definitely be back! Loved our little getaway.

It was nice and warm, had everything we needed and is very close to Bala lake and the town centre but enough away for it to be nice and quiet and lovely views. Owners were so lovely and very attentive if we needed anything and even brought us an extra fridge as it was Christmas incase we needed it. We throughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again in the future. Thank you very much for the Christmas gifts and a wonderful short break.

When we arrived the owner let us in and there was strong smell,that smelt like fresh varnish.

I didnt mention it as I thought it would improve. It turned out that the smell did not disappear and affected my daughter and gave her head ache. I complained and was told the smell was from the boiler which had been serviced a week ago. They told me it should go away. It did not go away and they called out a plumber to look at it. The plumber agreed it was probably to do with it being serviced. I mentioned that they should have informed us of the strong smell from the boiler, owner was adamant he could not smell anything. I was disappointed with his attitude and response. The cottage itself was well equipped however it was dusty in places and there was evidence of woodworm in the beams. The upstairs toilet door and door leading into the kitchen kept jamming, which is a hazard.

The owners provided a lovely welcome tray and left tea, coffee etc for us.

The kitchen was well equipped, the views were fabulous and it was spacious. It’s only a short walk to the lake and into Bala. The owners are very helpful and welcoming. We’d recommend the property to others.

Sykes we extremely helpful in helping us navigate the booking of our holiday during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Our call was answered quickly (by somebody in the UK - not a foreign call centre!!) and the lady I spoke to answered my questions with certainty and put my mind at rest that our booking was secure even if travel restrictions changed. Cannot recommend our accommodation highly enough. A beautiful cottage in a stunning location with great views. Better equipped than some '5-star' hotels I've stayed in. Spotlessly clean, lovely comfy beds, awesome shower and even left us some tablets for the dishwasher! Our hosts were lovely people who even helped me get my poorly dog inside after he needed a trip to the local vets. Cannot thank them enough for their hospitality.

We had an extended stay as we were in the process of moving home. Found the area extremely beautiful especially in winter. We found the cottage met our needs admirably for a long stay (4 weeks) and the views over Bala with glimpses of the lake very Dylan Thomas. After we have settled in our new home we would certainly consider the cottage for a holiday in 2021 if conditions allow as Snowdonia lends itself to a lot more exploration. And we would look forward to shopping again at Mr Roberts the butcher to sample more of his excellent products and ready made meals. (faggots and pork pies deff. at top of list)

We were lucky to find Ysgubor Bach for our weekend getaway. The generosity of our hosts was much appreciated.

The hosts Deiniol and Anwen made us feel very welcome providing milk,tea,coffee and Welsh cakes in our lovely holiday dwelling.

The cottage was incredibly well-stocked for a holiday home - never any problems finding kitchen implements and gadgets for cooking. Location was great - within walking distance of the high street (albeit up a VERY steep hill back) and an easy drive to many local attractions. Plenty of parking available. The only thing possibly missing was a private outdoor seating area - I think we could have used the garden next door, but it felt we might be imposing on the owners' space. Nonetheless, would highly recommend.

The beautiful countryside, fantastic walks and relaxing environment

The cottage is lovely, comfortable & cosy.

Every little detail was thought of (washing up liquid to all condiments hand soap etc.) Books videos games in fact it was home from home. Mr & Mrs Jones are lovely nothing was too much trouble.

Great cottage, location and amazing scenery

Lovely quiet location with fantastic views.

Woken every morning by lambs bleating and the local pheasant. Accommodation was more than adequate and made a perfect base for days out. The nearby lake was well represented for activities for the kids as well.

Location is ideal for a relaxing break in North Wales, really enjoyed.

The cottage was very well kept, beautifully finished and very very clean.

We met the owner of the cottage on arrival and he gave us a tour of the place, showing us where the appliances are and making himself available whenever should we need help. The cottage itself is set back from the town up a quiet country road and provides tremendous peace and tranquility. We were very happy to walk up the hill back to the cottage after days out/trips to the pub, it only burned off those extra calories! However in Bala itself there are plenty of places to park if you didn’t fancy the walk back. All applicances worked like a dream, the washing machine came in handy a couple of times after some muddy hiking as well as sailing on the magnificent lake. We are very happy, and are planning a return in the near future.

only disappointment was photos depict large garden area available. this was actually away from cottage, and was an area in owners garden that we could have access to. This is not ideal for all dog owners. Fortunately ours are happy to stay close and not run away and there was a small private road and grass edge outside door we could use. But this should be made clear in details. Owners were very quick to resolve a couple of small issues we had in the cottage, also provided a couple of fans as it was very warm. The place was very clean and lovely and quiet.

Great location - a relatively short walk into Bala (though the hill is quite steep!

) where there is a good selection of nice pubs & restaurants. Also a good location for water sports on Bala Lake, where you can hire canoes, kayaks & paddle boards, and cycling, and of course the walking in the nearby Snowdonia Mountains. The accommodation is very well equipped and the owners are very friendly & helpful - we had a great week away & look forward to coming back again in the future.
